I was on the Holmesdale that night but to be honest don't remember too much about it apart from being rather cramped.
Disappointing that there wasn't a proper tv crew there as the only footage available is the grainy news coverage.

wouldn't it be wonderful if your mate found the person with the other sock

That'd be Dave Swindlehurst, wouldn't it? :-)

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

I arrived very early, parked in Clifton Road, had a swift one in The Clifton Arms and took my place in the AW soaking up the atmosphere.

As I recall the game was a pretty tense affair until Walsh scored. After that I remember feeling confident we'd win. Of course, at the final whistle, Selhurst erupted in a wild frenzy of pushing and shoving to get on the pitch. I was crushed against a barrier and thought my number was up. Terrified me. I had bruised ribs and was in agony.

To cap it all I left the ground to find my car had been towed away by the Police and a cone was there in it's place. Had to pay to get my car back.

Despite the bruises and the fine, it was a memorable Selhurst occasion.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Travel-wise, my dad and I treated it just like a normal evening game in that we set off on our drive from Erith at the usual time. It never crossed our minds to get to Selhurst any earlier.

Anyhow - perhaps weirdly so in hindsight - we had no difficulty whatsoever getting into the Holmesdale end, but I recall to this day our shock at seeing how many people were already in the ground. The historical accounts of "10,000 locked outside" seem surreal but at the same time "scary" in that they remind me how easy it would have been to miss surely the greatest night in CPFC history.
