Watching the Czech republic vs denmark....once again it sounded like the fellas in the commentary box were eating biscuits, drinking coffee and checking the stock market on their iPhone.

An excited commentator seems to be standard in many other countries....shouting for 95 minutes. Building up the excitement and making for good entertainment.

These dead bodies working the graveyard shift are ruining the beautiful game.

I have often noticed Palace games (against relegation teams) often get a commentator more interested in the top 6 teams in the table. While I am screaming at the telly, Nigel at sky is muttering some inane banal rubbish about the tyres on the referee's new ford focus.

Jonathan Pearce is a favourite of mine, and even though he's one of the most enthusiastic today, he used to be electric when he commentated on the radio. I used to watch on TV with the sound off and have Pearce yelling through the radio.

Don't dislike Guy Mowbray these days - he keeps his commentary relevant.

But, and I don't think I'm sexist, I really find it difficult to listen to female commentators. They seem to shriek and gabble their comments. They're the same in rugby too.

Those of us watching ITV tonight will be listening to Clive Tyldesley.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Guy Mowbray is numero uno as far as I’m concerned.

A learned commentator I have just spoken to informs me that both of the goalkeepers tonight, Pickford and Schmeichel, made their senior debuts whilst playing for Darlington.A font of all knowledge!

Some on HOL, somewhat advanced in age might recall commentator Idwal Robling who won a competition to be part of the BBC commentary team for the 1970 World Cup.
He is now sadly deceased.

He used to be on Capital Radio and I thought he had a soft spot for Palace - but he seems more Brighton based these days. No Bryon Butler I guess.

Jonathan Pearce lives in Sussex and he has family who are supporters of our club.
His allegiances lie with Bristol City but he might have a "Soft spot" for our club!

He was brilliant on the old capital gold sport. Hate to admit it and it’s always been something I’m quite ashamed of, but I used to like Alan Mullery presenting on there as well

I'm totally with you on female commentators POG! I feel the problem is that a lot of them are former female players, so, whilst they have the knowledge to comment on the game (although generally, for me, they tend to offer too much dissection), they have never been trained in public speech, voice modulation or any of the other techniques required for comfortable listening. Especially when they get a bit excited with the action (on the pitch that is!), and their voices go up the scale.

It's all this bl**dy silly equality nonsense. Pah!

I remember sitting at the back of the old stand many many years ago, just in front of Jonathan Pearce who was commentating for Capital Gold. It was a division 2 game on a wet weekday evening. The game was dire, but JP was screaming like a banshee trying to portray the game as some sort of El Classico.

I turned round and looked at him with a bit of a quizzical look, and he just grinned and shrugged his shoulders.

Fair play to him bigging-up what was a terrible game for the listeners at home.

I recall Jonathan Pearce commentating on the wireless on one of our games in bygone days. After we scored he screeched out "They will be celebrating in the xxx and yyy" with xxx and yyy being public houses in the Croydon region ! Perhaps he had been in them for a tipple or two !!
