I've always questioned why sports teams need an 'appointed' captain, who generally-speaking is thus the first name on the team sheet. Surely the best team for the game to come should be picked and then the armband given to the best person for the job. If the manager's preferred captain continues to do the business, then they will continue in the team and in the role in any case. Maybe there's an exception with cricket, given that the captain has a more 'controlling' role on the field and (if the old ways prevail) a hand in picking the team.
