A marksman - Bats.

To replace those positions in the PL will be a very costly exercise, if it can be done.

Its so easy to just get rid of people, there will have been mistakes.

A more balanced policy would have paid off better imo.

Agree to a fair degree . Both Townsend, and Bats need replacing, all the more so because of the effect of not having Eze,
We definitely need more cover for Benteke, and even though the over all style might change we still need the option of another wide player.
Ayew, doesnít cut it as an only option, to Townsend, and from what I have seen of Olise, itís not really his position. In fact he has always struck me as essentially a left sided player.and not an out and out wide man either
Rak-Saki, is showing a lot of promise, and improving all the time, he might arrive with a bang, itís happened before.

Most likely Gallagher is joining on loan from Chelsea. So that is also a great signing.

Maybe give Clyne a new contract for another 18 months as even if Ferguson recovers this season he will take time as he was out injured a lot.

Mitchell and Hannam are good left back options.

Centre backs have improved. Palace have good keepers in Guaita and Butland.

Another striker would be great and another winger/CAM to take pressure of Wilf e.g. Matheus Pereira of West Brom. Also hopefully we see more under 23 be given some more game time even if it goes off the bench.

I donít see Olise as a left sided player. I see him as a right side cutting in or more possible as a central player. Thatís just my opinion mind.

With respect you originally stated you feared where the goals would come from and I pointed out they managed 3 between them. So Iím going to stick to my original point that the centre backs will contribute as much to our goals tally as they both managed.

Itís all well and good having a workhorse winger like Townsend whoís always been defensively astute but the trouble is Palace donít score enough and they donít create enough so these wide attacking positions must start going to more effective players going forward.

Again thatís just my opinion of courseÖbut I was tired of seeing all the huff and no puff from so many of our forwards.

Well itís all about opinions. If we say he is essentially a middle of the park performer, which he is . Then we close up a bit.He isnít an obvious replacement for Townsends type of player.

Better player ,from what I have seen , yes, I will be expecting him to have a much better all round effect on things than Townsend was able to have. Hereís hoping.

We need (and have for many seasons past) a creative, ball holding, midfielder.

To say the least, such a player is a rare item but if we don't find one we shall never progress.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find someone older than me.

He canít possibly do a worse job than Townsend. He might have run around a lot but his tally of assists and goals was criminal. 13 goals in 5 years is nowhere near good enough. Why Benitez signed him is beyond me.

Wow, so interesting go different peopleís opinions can be. I think CDM is the position we need to worry about LEAST. In Luka, Kouyate, McArthur and Jairo we have four solid options there, for what will likely be one position.

Lets say PV plays a 433 formation.

Who would make your midfield if you needed two cdms?

in a 3 midfield

reidwald, mili wouldn't cut it. theres rumours kouate might be off. mcaurthur is a great player gives it his all but hes getting old now. reidwald when ive seen him play he looks quick enough mili not so but can put in really good passes.

gallagher would play in eze's place in front of them.

just naming midfield to front three would you not want a few more in?

reidwald, new cdm then gallagher in front of them,

zaha/rak saki, tekkers/mateta/ayew, olise(injured?), ayew.

this is why i think we need cdm first, then right mid/winger then striker last.

Not forgetting need comp for ward and kouate might leave.

This leaves center backs as tomkins, andersen, guhei. if we play a 3 at the back it sounds like tomkins couldnt play this so we would need another center back.

The way I see it in a pefect world just in case of injuries you need back ups to every player.

2 keepers, 2 left backs, if you play a 442 then 4 center backs, if you play 3 at the back add an extra center back so total 5 center backs. right backs 2. 4 cdm's, 2 or 3 cam's, 2 left wingers, 2 right wingers, 4 to 5 strikers.

remember out of these backups you can add youth players. so for example adding Omilabu to tekkers, mateta and ayew.

Possible youth players you could add to this for backups could be :

Hannam, Woods, Kirby, Rak Saki, Banks, Street, Omilabu.

So thats why i'd say we are still 3 or 4 players off what we need. center back if we play 3 at the back. cdm needed the most, cant see mc arthur doing that and mili not quick enough. cam looks like it might be gallagher so that would be sorted. right wing olise (injured?), ayew. need a right wing. striker to compete with tekkers and mateta, lets face it ayew should be backup for either right mid or stiker roles.

I think itís fair to say Zaha, Ayew and Olise can all play on the right.

have you seen when zaha plays on the right? he seems very very poor on that side.

I suppose we could try rak saki there but then that leaves needing a backup to zaha.

id say current front positions are :

zaha/rak-saki for left

tekkers, mateta, ayew for strikers

olise(injured?), ayew, rak-saki? unsure if rak-saki can play that side.

if we say no to rak-saki on the right and leave him as backup to zaha then surely we need someone on the right if olise is not fit. even if fit i dont feel confident enough with ayew there. for me ayew has to be striker or not on the pitch, sub only.

Seemed to me that under Roy Townsend wasn't encouraged to get up the pitch and put in crosses - or that was the increasing trend. I suspect he'll show quite nicely at Everton under a manager who uses him as a wing and not a wide midfielder.

His goals are part of the equation - an equal part is what he offers to the team as a whole - pace.

As I remember Andros wanted himself and Wilf to play on their opposite wings as he wanted to cut inside and take shots (not very successfully). This prevented an awfully large amount of ammunition for Benteke.
