If you take a short term view you could say we may not need him.
However in the longer term it would surely be better to get him bedded in.
I think McArthur and Kouyate are out of contract at the end of the season and both are getting older.
Gallagher is only on a season's loan, there has to be a doubt as to whether Luka will recover his early form after such a poor couple of years and I'm not sure Jairo is the answer as a midfield option.
Therefore I can see merit in bringing in Hughes as a longer term plan as well as him being able to contribute to this season.

Good post. It's important to keep in view the contracts ending next summer, several of which are unlikely to be extended.

I hear what you say about improving the squad, but we need to prioritise a proven goalscorer.

Let's keep the ball this season!

You are correct. Get Hughes in and get goalscorer on loan, if funds don’t stretch that far

Could be a cart before the horse situation. Our problem is essentially one of creating goal scoring opportunities. I think you will find that our conversion rate of chances created in the PL has been better than most PL teams over recent years. We simply haven't been creating enough chances. Whilst we can hope that we will improve in this department when Olise and Eze are back, we could do with a decent wide player and/or creative midfielder this window so as to provide Benteke, Zaha and others with more scoring opportunities.

According to this report he may turn out to be what we need.

We need to bolster the squad. I have always thought he was a decent player. I can’t imagine he would break the bank so it’s a yes from me.

He is being signed as a DM who can pass, of course we need him. I am a big fan of Scott Banks but no way is he ready for PL

When will he be ready? Ever?

I still think we need minimum of 3 possibly as many as 5. Hopefully Hughes, a winger, a striker and both full backs. We can make one more loan addition but we still require a lot for investment in the squad.

Not being able to fill a bench on Saturday demonstrates how bad the squad is at the moment.

The player would do fine for us. He's better than Riederwald, younger than McArthur and more suited to the current system than Schlupp. Although I'd not expect him to take us to a higher level, Hughes wouldn't let us down either.

More to the point, the players price seems like it might be very attractive in relation to his value, and that's a big consideration in itself.

In the same way that Palace need to ensure our incomings match or exceed our outgoings, so too do we need to ensure the squad value is as great or greater than its cost. This increasingly wasn't the case in the last few years, and it boxed us in terribly.

One way to develop the value of the squad in relation to its cost is to grow another AWB of course, but its also important to take advantage of situations like the one Hughes is in. He'll never play for Real Madrid but that's not the point. If he signed a new three or four year Watford contract tomorrow, he'd immediately be worth at least twice the figures we're talking about at the moment, maybe three times. Right now, his price is possibly far lower than his value, and as a trading company we can't afford to ignore opportunities like that.

It's vital to go all out occasionally and sign good players for vacant positions, like when we paid full market rate for Guehi and Andersen. We can only do that once or twice though, and will generally always need to box clever and find bargains.

A 'bargain' is usually a low price for a player that you'd have been prepared to pay far more for, because he's so vital. It can, however, also mean a very good price on a player you wouldn't have signed for a higher price, because you could probably live without him if you had to.

Even if we know full well that if Hughes did have three years left on his Watford contact we wouldn't even consider paying his transfer price, the fact is that he doesn't, and that changes everything.

He is exactly what we need. Who would you rather see on the ball in defensive midfield, him or Kouate?

My heart and head cry out for a right-back that can pass and right-winger that can cross. Midfield with Eze, Luka and Olise soon back - why add to that?
