When I see Benteke, Ayew, Kouyate, and Schlupp in the starting line-up (like at Old Tr), I know what kind of game we will see. And it is far, far from the system our new manager goes for.
Play Edouard on top with WZ and Olise on the wings, give them time and more time. My midfield trio would be Gallagher, Eze and Hughes/MacArthur. Players that can pass the ball and give our front three something to work on.

I do understand what your saying, sadly Tomkins and Benteke are not going to solve our current problems if PV wants to continue with the modern passing and high pressing attacking football, we need mobility and I have no confidence in Benteke as a holding player he just does not have the floor skills or any speed and whilst I accept he can head a ball he cannot control where it goes most of the time and very few goals in the modern premier league come from headers it more likely to be from high intensity passing football within the penalty area!

Ayew being made the scapegoat again, the guy gives 100% every game. It's a team game, he can't be solely responsible for every defeat.

Agree. There were many issues with the Man U performance and Ayew was pretty low down that list. PV clearly prefers him away from home - it worked quite well a few weeks back at Man City.

On Sunday Tekkers and Zaha were poor, in midfield CK and Jeff proved they can't hold and pass the ball (you can only play one of the 2) and in defence Tomkins and to a lesser extent Clyne were uncomfortable with the ball yet we persisted trying to pass the ball out from the back.

I've mentioned 6 players - Ayew is not one of them.

No, you are still misunderstanding. I am in no way saying that Benteke and Tomkins are the answer.

At the minute we are not playing high intensity pressing football. We are not winning the ball high up the pitch, or dictating play. We are surviving. The opposition is positionally marking Marc, and then pressing Tomkins who is hoofing it long every time.

Whilst we have Tomkins in the team we are unable to retain the ball. OE cant do anything in that type of game. So I am saying that whilst we are playing like this, Benteke is the better option up top.

Unfortunately our answer is to get Anderson back as quickly as possible. Then we can start to play some decent football and bring OE back in.

The best holding player we have and a real workhorse for the team is Ayew!

Tricky one - he is one of our better players in build up; great ball carrier, presses well and covers ground but when you're a forward player with, you have to be judged on output to some extent.. his output is literally as bad as you'll see in top level football.

I'd keep him in the squad, but I lean towards saying a forward player as poor as he is in front of goal is just not good enough for the level we're at.

He's scored 12 in 114 games for us, and when you think 9 of those came in the 19/20 season, that's a record of 3 goals in 77 games outside of that year.

It's just not enough, as much as I like him.

If we could get the same work rate out of Olise - Ayew wouldn’t get a look in imo.
Ayew’s work rate can’t be ignored but his final ball (not just finishing) is awful. Not scapegoating him but I do think Olise (or Shlupp) should get a run in Ayew’s place.

I also agree Shlupp in CM is “square peg - round hole” situation and odd given Hughes was sat on the bench.

That says it all really, we can not afford him in the offensive unit. OK, he works his socks off, but usually give the ball away, get a free kick or give one. And his final ball - either a cross or a shot - - please don't mention it!

if you add Ayews 3 in 77 to Benteke's 20 in 118, 23 in nearly 200 games, very poor by anyone's standard

Very good analysis. Anderson not only looks comfortable on the ball but when he has to bypass the press, he connects with his man 9/10 times (mainly Mitchell), we then work it forward in their final third. It leaves the opposition in a dilemma as they have to worry about what's behind them when pressing, allowing us to then build from the back as there's more space left from their uncertainty.

Tomkins can get it forward but its the accuracy that he lacks. It's more of a hoof to Benteke than a pick out from Anderson.

We have a very good starting 11, good attacking options but its our CB options that need upgrading if we are to continue to play this style of football without Anderson.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
