Can’t ever remember being so pleased and encouraged after a defeat. We were far better than against Norwich and I’d say it was actually one of our best performances of the season.
Ten thoughts:
1. Edouard is a dazzling talent. I’m not sure he is properly appreciated.
2. We have never felt as Wilf-proof as we do now. I still adore the guy but we can cope without him.
3. Ayew has been in incredible form lately and was superb today. Seeing him go off in tears was tough to witness. Is his Afcon dream ruined?
4. Andersen passed it like Hoddle tonight. What a player.
5. Mitchell looks tired. We lack cover at LB and that’s the only bit of Jan business we need to do.
6. Can we go a bit easier on the refs? He should have booked their left back earlier and bottled the backpass but the abuse was excessive.
7. Olise is so exciting. The way he cuts inside and delivers killer balls is great. Just what we never got from Andros.
8. We all love Joel Ward but let’s be honest - he just doesn’t offer enough going forward. We desperately need Ferguson to be the player we hope he is.
9. Luka was not as bad as everyone is saying but we miss Kouyate every time he doesn’t play.
10. Schlupp is not good enough to play for Palace.

A well reasoned response to a defeat. Even although I should be used to it at my age, I need time to see things a bit more clearly after losing ! My thoughts ;

1. Edouard I really like for his positivity. Still very young and still adjusting to the levels required in this league, but heading in the right direction.
2. Agree. But I thought we missed him yesterday.
3. Hard to critisise a guy that works as hard as he does. Plays out of position and gives 100%. Very clever on the ball and a snip at £2m
4. We missed Andersen's distribution while he was out. However he's not the sort of dominant centre back partner that I think Guehi needs. And therein lies a defensive problem we have in my opinion
5.I think Tyrick has been excellent. One piece clearly missing from his game is the ability to take players on and I'm not sure that's in his locker. We do need a back up but on a budget, that may have to come from within.
6.A tough issue this. Both players and officials are responsible for the current state of officiating. And it's not good. Looking just at the refereeing, I think the standard is not where it needs to be at the top level. I thought, and I think most of the stadium did, that Luka handled yesterday and yet the one person that didn't see it was the ref ! As for the back pass - that was a clear and obvious error in not penalising it. But it seems VAR is as inconsistent as the referees.
7.Olise is coming along nicely and I think PV is using him sensibly. He can become a big player for us.
8.I think Joel can be proud of his performances this season overall. However, yesterday West Ham focused on attacking our right flank and enjoyed a lot of success. I'm not relying on Ferguson to be the solution and it's a position that will require attention in the summer.
9.Sorry to say but I think Luka's best days are behind him. I can't think of one area of his play that hasn't declined over the past two seasons. At most a squad player now.
10.I want to like Schlupp, I really do. But I don't really see him fitting in with the direction PV is steering us in. He doesn't have the technical skills for it.

Although 3-0 at half time felt unjust it was down to quality on West Ham's part and a lack of on ours rather than bad luck IMO.

The cross for their first and Lanzini's goal were top drawer.

I thought it was interesting that for all our approach play a few old fashioned high balls into the box really rattled them towards the end and Mateta looked a real handful in the air.

Luck did in my opinion played a bit part in the result. WHU first could have bounced slightly higher and Guaita saves it, Eduoard's shot or/and Schlupps shots struck slightly differently and instead of hitting the woodwork they go in. I also thought Benteke had a couple of shots between defender's leg's that might have got a deflection. The hand ball was a 50/50 decision as well.

Moyes and several West Ham players have admitted they didn’t play very well yesterday. 2nd half it was obvious they wanted to coast. Genuinely think that if PV had brought on Olise and Eze at HT then we would have got something from the game.

The MOTD stat about Olise having a goal involvement every 63 minutes is unreal. What more does he have to do to start or at least get more minutes off the bench???

Makes no sense at all, how can a player beat another if he's being fouled?? Why do we constantly see Zaha throwing his toys out the pram?
..and as for Olise being instantly better would you have said that if Schlupp had taken his chance given to him by Ayew in the first minute!

Edited by Tickled pink (02 Jan 2022 10.52am)

The fouls on Ayew are often ones he initiates, or at least invites. He shields the ball, waits for contact then goes over at least as often as he looks to progress the ball forward. I don't blame him, he's a striker not a winger and he's doing his best for his team, but a more creative player, with greater vision, passing, dribbling and shooting abilities would be more positive than Ayew often is.

Yes, I'd place Olise noticeably above Ayew when it comes to creativity regardless of whether Schlupp scored yesterday or not. My opinion is based on everything I've seen of both players so far. Whether Olise is physically ready to play every week, or whether his defensive play is as good, or whether the team would become a bit too narrow with a left footer on the right are all separate questions of course.

For once a result that didn't upset me as much as it should because there were many positives to take from the game.
However - the downsides were Ward, Luka and Benteke.
Luka can be forgiven in as much as to play irregularly in that position is difficult - he sees so much of the ball and helps dictate play that he is bound to mess up.
Ward is too slow, his distribution is poor and he gets sucked out of position too often.
He works his butt off but it is not enough any longer.
Benteke - enough said - Edouarde may have missed a few chances but at least he had a go and was mobile - Benteke needs to leave soonest.
Ayew, Hughes, Mitchell were outstanding and most of the others did a good job as well - the result was a freak that's all and we move on.

They have Declan Rice, we have Luka. We probably lost the game because of that. You can say his handball was unlucky but what was he doing with his arm out? If our scouts can unearth a decent replacement for him alone I feel top 10 is within our grasp.
I respect Joel he is an amazing servant. Benteke to me should be a super sub, if the opponents fit. Yesterday he gave us nothing but against the right defence he can cause problems.
Onwards and upwards. Two firecracker away trips next this should keep the boys sharp.

Hughes' preferred position is as a DM and once McArthur is back a midfield of the two of them and Gallagher could prove a good option. I know Hughes is seen by some as a replacement for McArthur in due course but if he can do the DM role well why not use him there?

You think it’s fine to abuse a guy while he’s trying to do his job? Very odd.

You’re another who fell for the Townsend myth. Chase down the odd backpass you’re never going to get and they all bang on about “putting in a shift”.

Ward offers nothing going forward. We need to upgrade.

Schlupp is not a fantastic anything.

6, Refs create atmospheres so don't understand giving them less abuse at all.
7, Never got the hate for Townsend he always tried much harder then all his team mates just needed to be here now for us to see him shine by concentrating on his attacking only.
8, Ward has quite possibly been our most consistent player this season and I've seen him moving down the wing very purposefully, stop looking for things that don't need it!
9, You're not allowed to say Luka wasn't as bad as everyone is saying, you have to just hate him on here otherwise! ..and we do not miss Kouyate in midfield, defending is his place.
10, Utter utter rubbish, Schlupp makes a fantastic sub for the second half.

Both at Spurs and yesterday our defence set up way too narrow at times, esp for their first goal - I thought Spurs exploited that deliberately and Spam definitely did, other sides will do the same no doubt, Wright pointed it out on motd and reckoned Ayew should have been protecting Ward better, we need to have a plan to counter this, one of our midfielders filling the gap before it appears. Although one assumes the great PV is on to this, we're less shaky on set pieces already, but too many defenders were taken out by Lanzini for their second, three or four all panicking and going for the same ball.

An opposition footballer is also only doing his job so does that mean that even after repeatedly fouling one of our players it's unacceptable to abuse him also
