Dyer does get bad press. He isn't al pacino granted but he gets into character quite convincingly.

I may have missed it, but I don't recall seeing John Wayne get a mention. Surely we've enjoyed his films. I'll go with:

The Searchers/Rio Bravo - John Wayne

Another big name from a similar era was Robert Mitchum, good in:

Cape Fear and El Dorado.

Curtis was also good in Spartacus, of course. Then there's both Douglas and Curtis in 'The Vikings' - pure tosh but one of the movies Mrs YT and I will always watch when it's televised.

There's something about James Stewart's voice that I find hard to like.
Now Sam Elliott on the other hand! Great as Virgil in Tombstone and with Patrick Swayze in Road House.

What I mean is that when his name comes up there is s******ing, metaphorically. Personally I like that he gives 100% in his acting.
