Click bait says we are after Watford striker Dennis.

I would be happy with him of although I doubt it will happen as Watford will want too much money rather like Sarr.

Not convinced he offers more than Mateta and Edouard. Wouldn't complain if he came cheap - which as you say he won't - but not seeing a major upgrade.

The 10 goals looks good but proportionately it's in the same ballpark as our two boys managed. Would we offer him more opportunities to score? Maybe. But in truth Watford had enough goals in them last time - it was their defence that stank the place out.

I think he'd fit in our front line really well, dynamic and direct.

Only signed for a couple of mill, but agree that Watford would command a kings ransom.

I guess it depends on whether he had a relegation clause. You'd expect most players moving somewhere like that to insist on one.

Purely from an ability to score goals, he would interest. But Viera, demands defending from the front, and Dennis, really didn’t do that to well for Watford.
We scored fifty odd league goals last season, if compared to all but the top seven or so, that was good. With a bit more cohesion from the front players, not just so-called strikers it could have been more. Any so-called prolific striker has to fit the existing system, a big part of ours is what the player gives beyond putting the ball in the net. I don’t think Dennis, would be the all round package.

His pressing numbers actually stack up pretty well - was the first thing I checked. In fact it's just about the one stat he beats Mateta on - he was no more lethal in front of goal. In terms of XG - if you take that as any measure - they were essentially equal and the one most notable difference I can see was that Mateta was more likely to hit the target but even there there's little in it.

Was his pressing effective? In the Watford games I saw his pressing was not .in fact in one or two he was a liability, and was dragged off. That’s not to say he didn’t work ,but not effectively.
Regardless it would seem he wouldn’t actually improve us unless he improved.
Just an opinion based on witness, not someone’s stats.

I'd be very hesitant about Dennis, especially if the reported numbers of £20m are to be believed.

He played for Brugge when they basically won the league every year with a huge goal difference and was a 1 in 4 player.

He had one hot streak at Watford where he scored 5 in 6 but then only scored 2 goals after the turn of the year.

It's easy to get blinded by his hot streak and his decent return of 10 goals last season. However, 2 goals in his last 20 games for Watford and not being able to score more than 1 in 4 for a team that was dominating a lower level league would suggest his hot streak was an exception and he's not worth the money.

Not one for me.

Tarkowski on a free for CB competition, Cornet, Aarons and Normann are the only players I'd really be interested from the relegated teams.

What makes you think that Tarkowski would consider coming to us to warm the bench when he won't be short of offers from Premier League clubs to actually play

I did like the look of him and could see him as a Gallagher replacement. Similar approach to the game and mindset. Bit older and critically, not a scorer.

Picking up Andersen from Fulham was a pretty shrewd move and there should be some possibilities this off-season as well

Nick Pope. For me, Guaita was not quite so effective this season and Butland is no more than a backup. Pope, would probably be an upgrade, and will definitely want to leave to keep his England opportunities alive, However, he is 30 and probably there will be other sides keener than us

Maxwell Cornet. managed to score 9 goals for Burnley as a 25 year-old (next best player notched 3) in his first season in the Premier League. Could probably switch between the left side and central like Zaha. If there is a reasonable release fee he should be considered, particularly in the unlikely event that they can shift Benteke

Dwight McNeil. He came into the league as a very creative player but his stock has fallen and there was a time this year when the fans turned on him. However, he is virtually the same age as Gallagher and coming into this past season would probably have been higher rated. He seems an ideal replacement as a right sided midfielder and is currently on a very low salary

Pope is a non starter. Highly valued (c£40m) and not sure if he is that much better than what we have.

Comet is interesting. Did ok in his 1st season and supposedly has a £17m relegation release clause. Teams like Newcastle will be interested. Spurs are also sniffing around.

McNeil has had a very poor season. He is left footed though and usually plays on the left. Not sure he will be of interest to PV.

Tarkowski is out of contract and is 29. Supposedly Newcastle and West Ham have offered him over £100k a week. Only issue is the length of contract

Who are the other clubs that you think would come in for him that would have less competition for starting spots, other than the 3 promoted clubs that are likely to be in a relegation fight?

I'd also hope that any player would have the mentality that they have the ability to displace the current players at the club, rather than have a guarantee they would start.

I think we offer the least competition for regular playing time for a club in that 8th-17th area of the league, with only Anderson & Guehi as first choice and then an ageing and injury prone Tomkins as back up.

I'm not suggesting the club are in for him, however, I think both the player and club could do a lot worse and it would make sense to bring in a player of his experience and ability on a free for a couple of years whilst we focus on the more immediate requirements of the squad.

Midland will no doubt give his own answer. But from the rumours I've seen, I believe both Newcastle and Everton are interested in Tarkowski and he would likely get more game time with either of those two than with us (injuries aside). The other issue with Tarkowski could be wages.

As for our back up for Andersen and Guehi, we don't yet know what will happen with Kouyate but he is a CB cover option if he stays. Also, I can see Ward being asked to focus more on the CB cover role, especially if Clyne stays and makes the RB position his own.

As for Ferguson - who knows?!!

Finally, it will be interesting to see if Jake O'Brien gets a decent run out in pre-season, with a view to being CB cover or whether he'll get another loan out. The young Irish lad had a good spell at Swindon.
