My view is that there may be a possible misconception that the CF needs to be our main goal getter. In many ways the output of our strikers simply matches the trends in the modern game. The CF is no longer there just to score goals and there is a firm trend to inverted wingers being the main supply line.

Second point is our CFs scored 15 goals between them last season. To what extent does it matter that those goals were shared between 3 players? 15 goals is a decent return and not far short of 20 which is probably the optimum for a club of our size/ranking.

General thought is though that the problems lie in how well our forward line combines to create the right number and type of chances. We often looked dominant and/or pretty last season without actually creating that much.

Perfectly happy here to run with Olise Mateta/Edouard Zaha next season with the two inverted wingers combining to be our most likely source of goals with the central forward creating space and chipping in. To make this happen it would help to have a RB who can overlap on the right as Mitchell has on the left to allow Olise to cut in to even more effect.

Good post.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Given the fair sentiments above and the fact that the top clubs are greedy, having all the best goal scorers sewn up. Maybe we should forget about buying another and put all our money into helping Gallagher get to Qatar by playing at Palace next season.

Nothing like a good debate, so here's hoping I can start one:

There’s been talk on this site that we need to upgrade our strikers. But is there actually a need and if so, how great is it?

We simply don’t have the kind of money that would enable us to buy a proven 15 goal a season PL striker (never mind a 20 goal a season one). We are shopping in the lower leagues and less fashionable clubs overseas.

In last summer’s transfer window, there was talk of our getting Adam Armstrong from Blackburn. Southampton outbid us (£15.93m according to Transfermarkt - the figures quoted below are also from that site) and he’s basically been a nonentity there (3 goals and 3 assists in the PL). He spent most of the second half of the season on the bench.

Mitrovic at Fulham has scored some 70 goals over his last 2 Championship seasons but managed just 14 in his last 2 Premier league ones.

Basically, the gulf between the Championship and the Premier League can be massive for central strikers.

We bought Edouard and Mateta from other countries’ leagues for £14.69m and £9.9m respectively. They’ve scored 11 PL goals between them at the rate of a goal every 247 minutes. That equates to 14 goals over a full season which for a team like Palace is an OK return. Both players are 24 and IMHO will improve as they gain more PL experience (Mateta has already improved significantly since those early days under Hodgson).

I’m happy for us to keep them both and see what they can do next year and so for me, at least, there’s no urgent need to upgrade our strikers.

Over to you all!

IMO we do not need another striker, I believe Mateta will continue to improve, his running off the ball is very good. Eduoard I still believe we have a very good player there, personally I think he is a fox in the box.
What we need is a midfield that can win the ball and play that telling pass. I also feel Bieira woolije, on occasions to play 3 at the back. So go for 1-2 midfielders and another CB/FB

Both Edouard and Meteta are not premiership standard strikers and should be replaced . Out of the two , if we had to keep one it would be Edouard .

I think they are both PL standard given the right service. Mateta running off the ball is very good. If you have an odd £100m flying around perhaps we can improve.
This season has been a transition and we finished 12th and got to semi final, what more to people want? I am more than happy although frustrated about the late points we lost. Give them time it’s down to experience

I think a lot depends on Benteke and Eddie Nketiah, If we go into the market to buy a striker we need Benteke off the books. He will want to play at world Cup so may be inclined to take a wage drop and go. The Eddie Nketiah saga goes on and on, there are rumours he may stay at the Gunners but he seems PV's first choice so who knows.

We have had a number of big men as our CF over last few years and none have made the position there own. They can't all have been rubbish, the fact is our supply to them is poor and they are not playing to there strengths.

Wilf is not a striker, his conversion rate is very low, he is a winger who scores goals. I am not saying we don't need that but he rarely passes to a colleague in a better position but has a go himself. Players like Benteke do not make chances they convert them so we need an Andy Johnson type striker who can make and convert chances and play as a team member

Some good stuff, here. Thanks guys.

let me add a little something else.

The only two PL players to top 20 PL goals this season were wide players, Salah and Son.

So, not a single central striker hit the 20 goal mark. What is that telling us?

I know they are very much a one-off but Citeh scored 99 PL goals without using a recognised centre forward;

and

as for Chelsea's centre forwards, the less said the better.

Interestingly, of the top 25 goal scorers on the Beeb's list, only FOUR had a better shot-to-goal conversion rate than Wilf and of them, only Vardy is an out and out CF.

The game is changing and so must we.

My opinion is that we don’t need another striker at the minute. Edouard has a lot more to offer and is worth sticking with for another season. Mateta has got so much better over the season that if he got a few goals on the bounce he could score plenty more.

Very interesting debate. My ten penny worth is that Schluppie is potentially a top player and should shoot more from 20-30 yards. He needs to find openings but him and Wilf can pack a big punch from range. So Sch and Z are big weapons that should not be scared to blast from range. Olise is already on it with his amazing cut ins. Eze is another really skilful dark horse who should also have his eye in goal more.
Like you are all saying we’ve got a good squad. Sadly I think Benteke may be sliding down the wrong side of the hill now. I would get him off the payroll. Way to expensive.

We also have a striker from Derby on the way Plange i think his name is we bought him and loaned him back in the last window . Dont know much about him though .

Totally agree I thought that when he played there , I still would like to see them both play together but we wont play 4 up front sadly , getting a prem striker ask the other 15 clubs that we match with , thats there dream to so we get lucky every now and then with a 20+ striker , I would love Wilf with 11 Matata 15 Edouard 15 Olise 10 thats 51 with them 4 so 20+ striker not a must but it does help

Whether it helps depends on how the team is set up and who else is able to contribute. After all, AJ scored 21 PL goals in 2004/05. Unfortunately, the rest of the team could muster only 20 between them and we were relegated.

Quite agree - think a "holistic" approach is most informative.

Looking at last season I'd have said that the hole in our side was the comparative paucity of goals from the right - where we had Ayew stationed for much of the time - and not centrally. It also shouldn't be forgotten that Gallagher got 8 goals playing in an advanced central position - frequently in areas where you'd expect the CF to be.

I haven't done it but I imagine the "wagon wheel" of our goals would show a significant imbalance to the left and centre. If we can improve our output from the right then theoretically we should be more productive. But then of course we'll need to replace - presumably - the goals from a late arriving mid in the box.

An additional thought here is that improving the range of areas we threaten from also improves our likely goal output. It was still the case - in my head anyway - that we became too easy to defend against when it was Zaha on the left and Ayew on the right just because the the likely threat was too easy to predict. Add an Olise on the left and then it becomes a much trickier defence to organise as you cannot immediately double mark down one side.
