I think in the Parrish era we have been fortunate to have a good spread of leaders in our squad. The likes of Delaney and Jedinak spring to mind and in our current group i feel the likes of McCarthur, Ward, Hughes & Milivojevic are some of the people who set the standards the group need to play to, possibly with the likes of Ayew and Zaha as well.
Problem i think we need to be aware of is as we strive to bring in younger players we needs some leaders in the people we recruit. I think the Guehi signing was particularly good in this respect but i am not putting Olise and Mateta in this catogary yet.

Guehi reminds me of Southgate in that he appears to have an old head on young shoulders. If we manage to hold onto him he could end up our captain for a very long time.

If McGuire was 80 million this chap is treble figures.
Id take that if offered

Yep, tends to be the defensive players for some reason. Certainly Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Tonks, Macca, Luka and Kouyate for me - all have good leadership ability. Perhaps that's why we defend well but don't score enough goals...

To defend well takes discipline, a leader within the midst of the defending unit to take responsibility, organise those around them & make sure they have the commitment from those other players, so its probably not a surprise that the majority of team captains come from the centre of defence or midfield - Additionally as we have seen said on here numerous times before, a leaky defence will get you relegated.

Another season of steady improvement and he could well be that figure and I tend to agree, we would be foolish to turn down such money given what we could do with it.

A captain needs to be able to see the whole game.

All players generally see what is in front of them. Defenders see more from the back and can identify issues more easily than those running towards the goal.

However there are some captains that lead by example e.g. Harry Kane

Ive always been biased towards CMs being captains as I think theyre best placed. Never been a fan of GKs or Forwards being captains and see that as only ceremonial.

IMHO you need to be tactically astute, lead by example, able to communicate and of course command the respect of your teammates.

Id be strongly inclined to believe or agree MG has all of these.

I know he came from the rent boys, but he was somewhat unknown before us. Id love to believe he sees Palace at home now and whilst he may deservedly have greater expectations Id like to see what he can achieve here first and I think could very well do so as captain.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

It beats me why Luka is mentioned as a good leader.

McArthur and Ward much better and both around to calm Zaha down
whereas Luka was never there.

Not only that but just seen a re-run of the Palace home match against Villa and his passing was awful and gave the ball away too often. Will be glad when he seeks pastures new ...

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder to find someone older than me.

I think there is a wider variety of `styles` of captains than there used to be.

The likes of Keane and Pearce were fearsome in your face captains. I wouldn't have argued with them. However I think the game and attitudes have matured a bit and there is a generation of more `molly cuddling` captains. It's the same for managers now too. I think the likes of MG fit into this more modern iteration of a captain.

Because numerous players have come out and said he is, explaining how he communicates and drives everyone forward. Luka actually has come to Zaha's aid multiple times...but I realise it's fashionable to suggest otherwise.

Anyway, he's not the future. That's obvious. Guehi for captain.

I like the observation by doi209 about been able to "see the whole game". People like McCarthur in my opinion have this vision and so when they see say Zaha or Eze are not tracking back to cover the full backs they can have a word while still been able to concentrate on their own job. Similarly when defending set pieces there is someone who notices there is an unmarked player in the box that needs picking up. You need these type of players and i think Palace need to take this into account when recruiting. You look at teams like Watford who despite Roy's organisation skills were still leaking goals.
