I only saw Mark Lazarus play once but as a boxing fan I met him a couple of years ago at a LEBA meeting (London Ex-boxers). Mark was dressed like a cockney geezer with flat white cap and smart jacket complete with a growly voice. He was very modest and played down his football career but was very happy to chat about our promotion in 1969.

I've just looked him up. He's 83 now and when he retired he was Steve Davis's bodyguard ffs.
I know his brother boxed under the name of Lou Lazar and he beat Ronnie Kray .... which must have gone down well! A solid East end Jewish boxing family.

As did the pugilist a few days later....in the Thames with a concrete block tied to his feet!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

My mate was at Cliff Jackson's funeral and Mark Lazarus was there. There seems to be a strong bond between the players in that team.

Thanks to Regp for starting this thread. I was telling my son about these laps of honour a couple of months ago and he didn't really believe me - I was starting to doubt my memory. As far as I can see from the records, Mark scored 17 goals for Palace and I must have seen most of them. I don't remember much about the actual goals but the laps of honour stuck in my mind for 50+ years.

He was a real character and used his boxing skills to good use on at least one occasion, think it was against Millwall at the Palace when he both thumped someone and started walking off before the ref sent him off, all in one action. His laps of honour were something else!

Bring back Brolin
