I do actually look back at that game quite fondly and have always been proud to say I was there. It was a bit of a nightmare for me as well because I had my leg in plaster, but still strangely enjoyed the day

I think we can also be proud of the way the team recovered from that, it was a massive reality check. A few days later we travelled away to a good saints side, dug in and got a point

I know mate, it actually was an enjoyable day. Liverpool allocated us a few thousand extra tickets. The most away fans I can remember seeing bar play offs etc.
Anyway, we blamed Perry Suckling if you remember, so everyone else got off Scot free. I know he wasn't the best goalie ever, but it really wasn't his fault! But them's the breaks.

I agree, it was one of those days you just feel sorry for the keeper, he was so badly exposed that day.
It was a strange game, because it was one of those days where Liverpool seemed to score every chance they had, it wasn’t absolutely one way traffic, or maybe with time and age I’m remembering it wrong

Weirdly enough one of my favourite away days which made the 4 - 3 even sweeter

I can remember the running joke was when is kick off for the Palace v Livetpool game. Every ten minutes was the reply 😆

I too look back on the 0-9 trip with fondness. The crazy, naive way the team kept trying to attack...the way the lads and lasses never stopped supporting them...the surreality of the whole expedition.

One small snippet. As we came out of Anfield, we passed Steve Staunton (if I recall correctly; it was definitely a Liverpool player who hadn't been picked for the game). He was standing there in his suit and raincoat chatting to someone while trying to stay incongruous. A Palace fan spotted him and shouted to him as he passed him: "Aaaaahhhhhh Staunton! You've got no hope of getting picked after that performance mate!! Ha Ha Haaaaa!"

In that instant, that guy summed up the indomitable spirit of the Palace fan, and no doubt of the football fan in general. We've just been stuffed 9-0. You think I'm gonna quietly skulk away in silence and embarrassment? No! I'm gonna use even our humiliation to goad an opponent.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

In some ways it's easier to have a laugh if you have lost 9-0 than if your side has just lost a close game 2-3 in the dying seconds.

The difference between stoic resignation, and expectation dashed.

"It's the hope that kills you".

Agree there Pete!

I didn’t even get to celebrate getting the penalty , I had gone to the toilet and heard the cheer and came back to see a police men laughing his head off.
I was only 15 and I didn’t get home to 4o’clock never loved my mum as much as I did when she told me I didn’t need to go to school the day after.

There is definitely a bit of kudos having gone to the 9-0 and it shuts the mugs up who try to take the piss.

That season, we also lost 4-0 to Everton and some scouser said “Hey, they don’t like it up Merseyside do dey”. Always hated scousers!

Spare a thought for Dundee Harp who beat Aberdeen Rovers 35-0 then found out Arbroath had just beaten Bon Accord 36-0 on the same day.

I remember Stirling beat Selkirk 20-0 a few years back. It was 5-0 at HT. I can imagine the Selkirk manager saying “ well done lads, I thought it would be at least 10”

When Derby beat Finn Harps 12-0 in the EUFA Cup Dave MacKay, who was their manager, said - In the away leg we will be underestimating the opposition.
