Used to use the Stick & Weasel down the road in the early 90s. Think it changed its name later on.

Ah, ok. Interesting that. 'Stick' and 'weasel' are both associated with old days weaving, and is the other explanation of the rhyme. The 'weasel' would measure the length of the yarn and 'pop' when it was the correct length. Can't remember the stick bit I'm afraid. My grandmother, who imparted this info passed many years ago.

Systematically dragged down by the lawmakers

I seem to remember Anthony Newly who had a hit with the children's rhyme "pop goes the weasel", anyway he claimed that popping the weasel was London Tailors slang for pawning your stuff. Apparently the tailors would pawn their tools for beer money and go to the local pub "In and out of the Eagle".

Yes, it was Syrup but Irish jig also came into use. There's a whole load of research about it online.

When I'm hungry, I say to the wife that I'm Hank Marvin, but she insists it should be Lee Marvin.

Who's right ?

Hank's real surname is Rankin which takes a back a couple of posts.
