If Sam Johnstone is fit why was he not given a chance to play today - surely wouldn’t have done worse than Guaita. If he is not why was Jack Butland allowed to go to Man U? Last year he played all the FA Cup matches, including the semi final so surely worth hanging on to him at least until the closing of the transfer window. Doesn’t seem to make much sense

Butland just not given a chance but as you say Johnstone should be first choice.
Sadly, this club appears to have a fixation with playing the likes of Guita & Speroni before him, for too long.
The continued selection of a very flawed 36 year old just another example of a poor PV decision.

I can't recall a single time that the club has chosen Julian Speroni to play ahead of Sam Johnstone considering they've never been part of the same squad. If you're referring to selecting older goalkeepers to be a bad thing I'd disagree. In face Speroni was on the end of harsh treatment when it was decided that Hennessey and McCarthy were more worthy of a place in the side ahead of him despite Jules having done nothing wrong and in many fans eyes still being a vastly superior goalkeeper to the other two. Possibly another occasion that Pardew took a dislike to players popular with our supporters as he seemed to like doing that.

"It's ok postman , he'll lick you to death" "That isn't really that comforting , I still end up dead !!"
