I just can't take any mention of FFP seriously. Quite clearly nor do most of the owners of clubs. I find the excuse of FFP only arises when the club has run out of money. It seems more a tool to fool fans, than to regulate football.
Weren't there clubs in breach the last couple of years - Everton spring to mind but it wasn't only them. Obviously Man City but why even mention it.
What's happened to them?
Man City should actually have all of their titles taken away when you consider they are supposed to be facing 97 charges. Groovy Arab/London/New York lawyers should not be able to just get you off. Nor should the clear threats from Man City.
Basically, FFP only exists when a club wants it to. Otherwise, forget about it and do what you like.

I’d imagine Leicester take it seriously now and it looks like Wolves are this season also.

I think that our extremely rich owners would be spending a lot more on players if FFP wasn't real.

Love This.

It's a wonderful Ideal to only buy at the right price. We are at the stage however, that we can, and need to, sell one and buy 2. so FFP doesn't cripple up like it did when we bouught Benteke and Sakho

I certainly wouldn’t be against the club selling a good player and being able to finance genuine improvements in the squad by doing so. That’s the football business for clubs like ours…in fact I’d argue it’s the best way of building a better team if you don’t have the money already.

If we can continue to bring in players with the quality we have recently, then selling one to buy two is very much like saying 1 step back, 2 steps forward. It also means we should never again be so reliant on one single player like we were for so long with Zaha.

Absolutely. Thoroughly enjoyed your original post too Hudson must say.

The players we have been bringing in of late all do seem to fall within the bracket of 'investments' as opposed to immediate solutions (although hopefully both).

The investment may pay dividends through increased performance of the team but equally through better financial health. The reinvestment will then hopefully save us or mitigate any disaster an unsustainable practice may bring. A lot of 'ifs' there but a plan beyond perennial and mere 'heads above water'.

Interesting thoughts on Wolves too, I hadn't given them much, but it does sound as though they could be headed down the hill they had initially climbed due for lack of that which has been articulated.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Newcastle had to sell ASM to abide by FFP. Howe said it himself.

And despite currently still surviving in the PL, it's clear Everton are taking FFP seriously as they don't have the money to buy the players they want without selling. I suspect their interest in Gnonto is linked to their hope that we'll pay them some money for Gray (if our interest in him is real).

Also Newcastle seem to be taking it seriously, presumably because they are under the spotlight. We can add even Man U who need to sell in order to buy. We have remember that FFP works on a 3 year cycle. We spent a lot for us over the last two years.

I’d like to mention as well, that in two seasons the value of the squad has gone from £200m to £300m. That’s even after losing Wilf, who was valued at £45m back then. So, that left the remainder of the squad worth roughly half of what it’s worth today.

You could argue a few factors in why this has happened. Inflation is obvious, and spending money on players is also key. That being said, we know that you normally have to spend money just to stand still in this game.

My main point is this…the club clearly changed tact a couple of seasons ago, clear to us all I’m sure, and it’s been a big success. We may be no closer to a top 10 finish than in previous seasons, but we are managing to perform to the same level, at the same time as having younger players worth more money.

It’s great to see. I’d rather be linked with a Franca than a Milner all day long.

I must be a minority, but I love the way the club is run. Parish is, IMO, smarter than the money bags owners of other clubs our size in the division.

I’m from the midlands, and I’ve been telling friends for a couple of years now, that Wolves are going to fall apart. Where we spend only what we can, Wolves have spent lavishly. £40m isn’t a high price to them. But this season, they have sold £80m worth of players, and still need to sell more to bring players in. That’s simply down to FFP forcing their hand. We have never been in that situation. It used to hurt me to watch a club like Wolves come up from the championship and immediately look better than us, and they did very well for a short period, but spending like that, it’s not sustainable. Now they are in big trouble. They looked a poor side last year, and I’d have them tipped for another bad season ahead.

We rebuilt the squad for £70m not long ago. That’s the sort of money that gets you two good players in this current market. I think given the money available, it’s remarkable to still see us competing in the prem.

Id love to have seen a new right back last season. But I’d argue that if the prices being quoted are not good value, if these players don’t represent a £20m improvement over what we have, then the club has likely decided to bide their time. It’s that sort of attitude that means we don’t have to accept low offers for our true stars.

Well said

This is the crux of it for me, it’s about the club having the mentality and balls to trust in youth and buying players for the future but also not being afraid of using them now.

This is partly why I was so unsure of Roy because he loves an older experienced head and literally has to be left with no alternatives before he will pick say a JRS over say a Schlupp, but I’m not going to try and second guess what he is going to do this season so I’ll wait and see.

I think getting players in is a little more complicated than we think, if, and if we sell Andersen or Guehi before the window closes, we are looking at the 20/30m players, if nobody is sold we are looking at maybe a 12/15m player and a loan or two, there is no point in buying Gray, if you have more money, then you go for a Sarr/Gnonto, tricky if you dont know if a 70m bid is about to come in.

Sarr has gone to Marseille

How about Nicolas Pépé from Arsenal on a loan?
