For most of the last ten years in the premier league,my excitment from palace was reliant on Wilf or the period of Pardews management when Bolasie was with us.For some time now, the anxiety of trying to hold out for a Nil Nil draw for me is depressing. Help Me:

Fact is Bill, we don't feel like a club that is ever going to be rolling in cash, therefore we can't afford a team of top notch players so we'll always struggle just to tread water in the world's top league. Most of us would agree with you that we want to see our team winning more matches, but we also enjoy seeing the challenge of playing against the world's top clubs. If we drop to the Championship (or lower) the standard of competition also drops and, as a consequence, the quality of our team will also reduce. Not sure about Dulwich Hamlet, but I know there is great enjoyment to be had watching my local village team. But I thrive on the charisma of supporting my boyhood club competing in the Premier League. BTW love the musical accompaniment to your post.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Yes I miss 1979 as well You mention Pardew Bill, well I don’t hate him like some do, at least we attacked and got our flair players on the ball more, well I should say player not players, as in Wilf Edited by monkey (28 Dec 2023 11.31am)

You're obviously right, but we've had infinitely more enjoyable seasons over the last decade with that same reality being true - no one is expecting us to win the league, but we're almost uniquely unambitious in this division, and this season has been an absolutely dire watch barring a game or two. There is of course a balance to be struck between pragmatism and entertainment, but currently it's all pragmatism and absolutely no entertainment. We're already the team to do the longest stint in the Premier League without qualifying for a European competition - Hull have been to Europe, Stoke went to Europe, Wigan went to Europe, Bolton, Burnley, Everton, Brighton, Wolves... but apparently we're unrealistic to expect we could have a go at it. Regardless of what tier you are in, not signing a right-back for 15 years is going to cause you some problems. Having one left-back in the squad for 3 years straight is going to catch up with you. Losing your best ever player on a free and replacing him with an 18 year old who your manager doesn't trust is not good enough, regardless of level.

It's the old story, Bill. When it comes to wages football is entertainment and the players are entitled to be paid as such.

It's really difficult to know whether a spell in the Championship would deliver a more satisfying experience, or even prove to be a blessing in disguise. I have followed Palace for over 70 years and feel very proud that the club I first supported in the 3rd Division South is now an established member of the world's biggest league but watching them struggle each year just to hold onto that is dispiriting. Especially when there have been many times that delivered entertainment and fun. It's not just us. The type of high-pressure football on display in which the flare players are given no time or space isn't good to watch. I guess we have planned to buy quality cheaply, put it on display, sell high to fund the new stand and then replace from within the academy. The first bit looks to be OK but the second not yet so I suspect we will try to just hang on again as the fear of going down and not bouncing back is just too great. The owners won't mind the quality as we do. Their priorities are different. Pro footballers don't recognise the concept of a "good" goal. For them a goal is a goal. Same with owners. A win is a win, however it is achieved. Unless they are mega-rich. Would we want that? As we won't be asked anyway our views don't matter. The only thing I feel confident about is that it's not going to get any easier in the PL.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |
