I have to say I always enjoy Jonathan Coe's books. Always a good read and usually set in the social and political landscape of Britain, but without being preachy or earnest.

Among my favourites: - For Frederick Forsyth fans: I liked "The Fourth Protocol" best and his two books with short stories that often have a completely surprising ending "No comebacks" and "The veteran" - "The Mathematical Bridge" by Jim Kelly - All crime novels by Yrsa Sigurdardottir (liked "Why did you lie?" best) And finally for the sentimental: "Heaven has no favourites" by Erich Maria Remarque (famous for his book "All quiet on the Western Front", which is also very good). As a Palace fan, you won't cry about the ending, you're used to worse things every weekend. But maybe your wives......

The Collector by John Fowles, a few others I could mention but I recommend The Black Cloud by Fred Hoyle - a science novel rather than science fiction, and written by a brilliant maverick scientist.
