I imagine that is what the club want to do (and Glasner). I understand we are not under any undue pressure with PSR but may not have a great amount of readies for new players.

We now know that Ward has been retained (along with Schlupp and Hughes, with the latter's appearances triggering a 1 year extension) and that negotiations continue with Clyne and Matthews. If they both sign up for another year (and we don't lose any of our stars) that will make a 1st team squad of 22 plus our under age 1st team players (Wharton, Franca and Ozoh).

Furthermore, Glasner has shown he can get players to adapt successfully to unfamiliar roles with Lerma and Clyne both doing well as emergency CBs.

What money we do have will probably go on a player Glasner specifically wants.

He may well look to the German league for recruit/s as he has a lot of experience there. Then he might be able to bring in player/s slightly under the radar and at good prices.

I cant pretend I've ever seen him play, but IMO if he cant displace Coufal, he cant be that great. Coufal is good, but lets be honest he's not top tier.

When I've seen him he's looked like he's more comfortable getting forward than Mitchell, but he hasn't really played much so it is hard to say with any degree of certainty.

Johnson can dribble, is quick, and importantly, can play left-back as well as right-back. I think he might surprise a few people if we signed him and would provide competition to Mitchell as well as being a backup for Munoz (Ward and Clyne are not suited to being wingbacks). I noticed Everton are apparently sniffing around now though so we'll see.

I don’t think Everton have got any money left, wouldn’t worry about them

Surely we’re not expecting top tier in the free transfer market though - we’re looking for players who improve the squad, add some depth, and should retain a decent re-sale value somewhere down the line - Johnson ticks all of those boxes.

The two options we have in that RCB/RB profile are going to be 33 and 35 next season, and one of them is still out of contract as it stands.

Seems a no-brainer to me.

Moyes and Hodgson are cut from the same cloth and consistently play their players religiously when maybe others in the fan base think differently. Johnson looks to be athletic, strong and quick so placed in the right system and environment COULD flourish. I see no downside when the right player is free!!

Rob Holding was a no brainer, but has added zero to the squad.

Lerma was a no brainer and he added loads of value to the squad.

100% agree, but Lerma was playing week in week out for a team about our level. Also 40 caps for a pretty good footballing nation.

He doesn't get in the team because he and Moyes had a row about him signing a new contract, i hope we get him for R & L back cover, whoever gets him on a free, will have got a bargain.

And Holding was playing week in week out for Arsenal not long ago - my point was more that just throwing out one example of a similar transfer that succeeded/failed is not proving anything.

Only because he's been injured. Holding is a decent player and if we continue with three CBs, we'll need maybe five in the squad and he's definitely worthy of one of those spots.

As for the thread title, wish we could get Lloyd Kelly who is out of contract from Bournemouth. Seems he might be off to Newcastle though.
