Trouble is, that we would have to include our current administration as well as Thatcher's amongst those capable of pulling this sort of thing off. But what a fcuking disgrace. PS am reading "blowback" at the moment. Makes very interesting reading at points.

This is the tip of the iceberg, folks. Remember selling fighter jets to Indonesia so they could bomb villages in East Timor? (And yes, Blair's goverment did it too, claiming the frankly incredible excuse that they couldn't break an existing contract, no matter whose lives were at stake. That's an ethical foreign policy for you.) There's plenty more where that came from. Don't forget who armed and financed Bin Laden either. OKnotOK -- tell me more about this book.

Well Blowback is written by this guy Chalmers Johnson who is a former member of the US Army, who has become steadily more and more disillussioned with the way the US military and CIA work around the world. Blowback is apparently a term coined by the CIA to describe the unitended consequences of American foreign policies. The book is about the effects of American foreign policy and how many of the attacks perpetrated against the US are "blowback" from earlier covert operations. [Link] I have replaced the Blackwells link cos it was too long. But Amazon only seem to have an American version available. But you can buy it in any shop. I have seen it in Waterstones and Borders and stuff like that. Anyway it was written before 09/11 but got ignored in the States. And then he reissued it afterwards when it got a lot of attention there. At the moment, I have just finished the bit when he has looked at American military colonisation of Okinawa and is now looking at America's policy vis-a-vis Indonesia (and East Timor). We'll flog anything, to anyone, for whatever end result, provided that the money's right. That goes for British governments whether they're Labour or Tory. I'm not anti-British at all, but the double standards in this and other cases don't make me proud to be. Surely even you Pete can find things about this country that you don't like.

Great story by the Guardian, it's what good journalism is all about. BUT it (and very possibly Slug) implies Britain is the enemy (again) and not Thatcher who was evidently no angel. (I still haven't forgiven her for getting rid of my milk when I was at school. It's another piece of history brought out to make us all feel guilty about being British. But why should we keep apologising for misdemenours by past governments etc right back to the colonial days. I don't think any country is perfect but it just seems by the threads on here that only USA, Israel and Britain are the b******s!!

You can't separate Thatcher from Britain so easily. The British public elected her three times despite being 'no angel' and certainly in the 1980s, when she won two of those elections, her policies were supported by a massive percentage of the population. Although I agree that we shouldn't apologise for things that happened a long time ago like colonialism, this issue directly affects the situation today. I don't see how anyone can argue that it is not double standards to build chemical plants in a country like Iraq one day (knowing full well what they were intended for) and then condemn the Iraqis the next day for building chemical weapons. Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and a load of the other countries in the Middle East are run by dangerous, fanatical, power-hungry dictators who don't give a s*** about their own people or anyone else. And we British are simply naive fools who go around trying to help these people out with their building projects and their tin-pot armies without knowing the consequences?? Hmmm. So gaining a full understanding of our history is anti-British is it? And communist, it seems. Yawn indeed. How predictable. I'd rather be an anti-British red than a patriot, if that involves pulling the blinkers on and pretending we're all perfect saints. After all, why should we look at what we've done and learn from it, when it's so much easier to call people names? Just briefly Pete actually addressed the article, once he'd got past his urgent desire to diss me. Who cares? I do Pete, so do millions of others, most notably those who lost family due to the chemical weapons produced by the factory our country built. Sorry if that bothers you. You seem to think it's acceptable to give a thug a bunch of vicious weapons provided he's our thug. You really have learned f*ck all. Penge, this piece of history is directly relevant to what we are doing now. Until we address, and come to terms with, our history then it should indeed be brought up. Otherwise the German nation might as well say "the Holocaust is history, why do we care?" and the chances of it happening again would be so much the greater. Is that a healthy attitude? Take your heads out of the (bomb-scorched) sand people. It's part of the truth, just as much as Saddam being a violent evil tyrant is part of the truth. If you're not willing to see the full picture, how can you form an opinion?

However, whilst I'm sure Britain are not innocent, we are also not the only country in this world. Every country is likely to do something immoral or bad in its public's eyes, but does that mean no one can be patriotic or at least be able to love the country where they were born and live. That's ridiculous! I was born in Britain and have lived here all my life. I'm not a very political person, and the weather here is crap at the best of times, but I don't feel I should be ashamed to wear my England shirt in public for example. Some posts I read seem to imply that I should. I think Pete takes things way too far, but a lot of what Slugs etc post just seems to be slating Britain at every opportunity - I know you will deny this Anyway, as I say I'm not very political and don't understand all the issues about our country, and more so the imminent war, so please don't throw loads of them back at me in a response Basically I just wanted to say that I feel I shouldn't have to hang my head in shame just because I'm British/English whatever. Erm...yeah...should I have bothered posting!?
