Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith is believed to be preparing a deal to persuade Liverpool defender Steve Staunton into making permanent switch to Selhurst Park. The Irish international was recalled by Reds boss Gerard Houllier yesterday.
Staunton, who was on a months loan with the Eagles and played in six matches, can leave Anfield on a free and Alan Smith is ready to offer him a two or a three-year contract.
However, Staunton will have to accept a wage cut if he decides to move to South London.
The Liverpool defender did impress during his spell at Palace and chairman Simon Jordan is more than keen to sign him for his club.
Staunton is currently in Greece with the Liverpool squad where they take on Olympiakos in the UEFA Cup tournament this evening.
