A young reserve team went down 2-1 at home to Southampton at Selhurst Park.
Iain Dowie is likely to field some reserve team players against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night.
So it gave Palace's young guns from the Academy a chance to shine and they battled bravely. They took an eighth minute lead as Eero Peltonen set up Ryan Hall to score.
Two minutes after half-time, the Saints equalised with a Leon Best header.
And on the hour mark, Leandre Griffit added a second goal for the south coast outfit as the Eagles suffered their third straight defeat.
Palace: Wilkinson, Starkey, Wilson, Swaibu, Straker, Berry, Welch (Dayton 75), Spence, R Hall, Grabban, Peltonen.
