Crystal Palace's winless start to the season continued with a 2-1 Capital One Cup defeat at Bristol City.

A stoppage time wonder goal from Owen Garven was the only bright point in a woeful display by the Eagles on their bogey ground.

Palace have not won at Ashton Gate since 1980 and Ian Holloway's side have yet to taste a victory this season from three attempts.

Holloway made 11 changes from Saturday's loss at Stoke, handing debuts to new boys Neil Alexander, Florian Marange and Elliot Grandin.

They deservedly went behind just before the hour mark after Jay Emmanuel-Thomas cut inside Peter Ramage and curled past keeper Alexander.

With 20 minutes left, the League One team put the game beyond Palace's reach as Scott Wagstaff had enough space on the edge of the box to control and hit a half-volley into the net.

Garvan got a spectacular volleyed effort as a consolation in the closing seconds but Palace exited round two of the competition for the second successive year.

Bristol City: Parish, Moloney, Flint, Williams (Fontaine 74), Cunningham, Wagstaff, Elliott, Reid, Bryan (Pack 64), Emmanuel-Thomas, Baldock (Harewood 72).

Not used: Fielding, Wilson, Wynter, Burns.

Palace: Alexander, Wynter (De Silva 68), Jerome Williams, Marange, Ramage, O'Keefe, Garvan, Grandin, Jon Williams, Dobbie (Phillips 46), Wilbraham (Appiah 55).

Not used: Fitzsimons, Parsons, Taylor, Boateng.
