Crystal Palace have further bolstered their midfield with the signing of Max Meyer from Schalke.

The Germany international joins Palace on a Bosman free after his contract expired and has signed a three-year contract reportedly worth £80,000 a week.

Meyer, 22, arrives just a day after the arrival of midfield man Cheikhou Kouyate from West Ham to become Palace's third capture of the summer.

He played a key role in Schalke's runners-up finish in the Bundesliga last season and made a total of 192 domestic and Champions League appearances, scoring 22 goals.

"I'm proud to be here and I hope I can make the next step in my career," he told the Palace website. "I want to give my best and I think we can have a good season - maybe better than the last.

"I played at Selhurst Park last season for Schalke and the atmosphere was perfect, and I can't wait to experience the atmosphere for a Premier League game."

Spanish goalkeeper Vicente Guaita was the first signing of pre-season, on a free from Getafe, and will battle it out with Wayne Hennessey for the No.1 jersey.
