Has anyone mentioned food?

There has been a definite dumbing down of food in the past few decades with the supermarkets pointing out that the great British public couldn't care less what they shoved down their throats.

When I was young chicken was a luxury and very tasty it was too whereas nowadays it is virtually tasteless. Likewise it would be difficult to tell the difference between supermarket beef or pork joints if you ate with your eyes closed.

The rise and rise of British crap food has given us an epidemic of type 2 diabetes.

It is highly noticeable when on holiday that the Spaniards and Greeks don't put up with the crap that we meekly accept

But on the whole "we" aren't picky as we no longer care enough about food and it isn't always price that puts people off

I drive a 45 minute round trip every week to a decent butcher and amongst other things they sell a boneless loin of pork which is about 15" long for £15 and it's big enough to serve a family of four - three times.

Even more basic stuff like mincemeat tastes a world apart from supermarket stuff.

Chickenwise I'm lucky enough to live near an organic free range pig farm where they also raise chickens that spend their lives scratching around the farm eating proper food like they are supposed to do. They are expensive to buy but well worth it.

I'm feeling hungry now and it's only 6:30am so a long time to dinner which incidentally will be a Cornish lobster as is our tradition on Christmas eve

That goes back to what I was saying about British people not caring enough about food. I have never used a supermarket delivery service but if I did it would only be for tins of baked beans and washing powder etc as there is no way that I would let someone else decide what meat or veg I am going to eat today.

Fishmonger? what's that

As a fish lover I have lived within a couple of miles of the North Eastern fish quays and then we moved to Brixham where the fresh fish is landed daily too but made the mistake of moving to the Midlands which is as far as one can get from the sea and what the supermarkets describe as fresh fish was probably landed a week or two ago

A good list, but I beg to differ on St George's Day. I'm 64 and I honestly can't remember anything of note happening on 23rd April in all that time, apart from maybe the St George's Day Parade by the Scout movement, and even that was on the most proximate Sunday. What marked the St George's Days of yore where you lived back in the day?
