I love Guiata and Butland seems a decent back-up, but I thought Johnstone was excellent when WBA were last in the PL and it's not often a keeper of his quality comes up for free. If we're serious about improving I think this deal would make sense.

It's funny, after I wrote this post I had a quick nose on the WBA forums and it seems you're right. It's weird as he looked top class in the PL.

Seems we're front runners This deal only happens if Guaita or Butland are leaving Guaita has spoken about going back to Spain and Valencia's keeper is apparently going to United, so I imagine that's the likely progression here. Johnstone and Butland to fight it our for number 1?

With Guaita saying he is going to leave at the end of the coming season why not change now ?

Could be financially sensible. Pickup Johnstone on a free transfer, and if Guaita wants to goto back to Spain then he must be under contract so we should receive a good fee for him. That will help with strengthening in other areas - ie. central midfield.

If bringing in Johnstone, someone must be going - probably Guaita.

BBC is reporting it: They seem to have it that signing Johnstone paves the way for Butland to leave although (imo) this makes little sense. I think Butland has been decent for us and is younger than Guiata. Agree with those above who have said if we get a fee for Guiata having a Butland/Johnstone competing for the number one jersey is not bad at all.

I dont think he did, he was reported saying at the awards & after the Utd match, he would still be here next season. I do agree he has said he would like to finish his career back at Valencia, but, he's only 35, got a few years left in him yet.

Does this mean, for the 1st time, we've actually beaten WetSpam to a signing they wanted . . . ?
