Rain is threatened Sunday afternoon. Maybe stokes actually wants to provide entertainment and wants a result. Got to admire him for that. Lots of people have spent lots of money and deserve some excitement which this surely will provide.

The Aussies were surprisingly defensive in their field placings which England exploited to an extent.
The BBC says
England took 54 singles in the first session, the most ever recorded in the history of Test cricket. Australia didn't manage a maiden until the 37th over of the day and bowled only one more.

Or maybe stokes just had a rush of blood to the head rather than a modicum of common sense. Who knows, eh?

Why "surprisingly"? They knew England's strategy is to go for quick runs via lots of boundaries and they knew it was good batting conditions. The obvious tactic, therefore, is to frustrate the batting side by only allowing them to score slowly.

As I've already posted, IMHO the most surprising decision of the day was - to a certain extent - for England to play into Australia's hand by not maximising the first innings score. It's not as if we've got a fear-inducing bowling attack. But as with all test match declarations, if you win, it was inspired; if you lose, it was foolish.

Because it was quite un-Australian.

It's very Australian to try to piss England off.

It certainly is. Usually, though, they try, and too often succeed, through aggression. Of course that might come out in their batting.

Our three seamers are pretty good especially if the sky is overcast as it is forecast to be and the Aussies should be wary of Moeen Ali too.

You may recall in 2005 one well known Aussie commentator said that any Australian batsman that got out to Ashley Giles should go and hang themselves yet he managed to get them all out

We left some runs out there, lost some wickets through ungainly swipes and dashes, yet bazball has somehow given us nearly 400 on day one.

But it's thanks to Root's class, time and again he holds the whole thing together.

And he has embraced the new method, playing shots unheard of just a few years ago.

I'm dreaming of an Australian collapse, but I think it's a case of 'dream on'.

When the shock declaration came I instantly thought of the Hansie Cronje declaration, all rather odd.

I didn't think the declaration was a shock - plus England would have got out sometime in the morning for maybe 20 more runs if that. Leaving Australia a day to go for it. Putting them in in the evening obviously means they need to open twice - which isn't easy - and has likely accounted for Warner. Get Smith and we're laughing.

I'm thinking that Stokes was informed that the weather was likely to be overcast for the morning. Gives his seamers a better chance.

Had sunshine been forecast I bet England would have batted on.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.
