'Theresa May: Infected Blood Inquiry highlights ‘abject failure’ of British state'.

She emerges with some credit, actually, ordering the inquiry, also the chair competent and precise.

The procession of UK state disasters continues, to which each one is normally attached a treasury-driven compensation scheme seemingly deliberately designed so useless it compounds the misery of the victims many of whom will be dead before receiving anything

'It must never happen again', it always does.

My tip for the next one, state-run compensation schemes.

The defence of state facilitated death and destruction on its citizens by some posters on here is disgraceful, but predictable.

State facilitated death and destruction? Makes it sound as though we behave the same way as authoritarian states often do. Maybe that’s where such extreme language comes from!

There have been decisions made that have subsequently been shown to be unwise. Whether they should have been avoided is a matter of opinion but you can be certain that no one deliberately set out to cause death or destruction.

Unwise? That's some consolation to the 30,000 people affected. Probably not so much for the 3,000 who died.

Whenever someone fails to fulfil their duty I can be as critical as anyone else. I have had several run ins with civil servants in a variety of Ministries in recent years where their reasoning was obscure to say the least and the pontificating endless. There is much that needs to be improved. As there is with the way our system of government functions.

That said I also try to understand the difficulties they currently work under and take issue with those who think that magic wands exist which could sprinkle fairy dust and everything would instantly be ok. Root and branch reform is required in some areas but that demands time, money and patience. None of which is available nor likely to be anytime soon.

It’s no consolation at all but that doesn’t change anything.

If positive change is to happen it needs to start with the way we organise our politics and then ensure that our representatives have the tools to do the job we expect from them.

Right. Well, "we" had better get on with that then. Just out of interest when have they ever done the job we expect from them?

That depends on who “we” are!

If you mean the electorate as a whole the answer will be spotty.

If you mean the majority cohort here, never! Here people pontificate but don’t participate. If you think change is needed you don’t just have to think you must get out and help to organise it. Democratically of course.

And at the end of that, however it's supposed to happen, we'll still be electing MPs to take decisions as they see fit. Or is that one of the changes?
If not it then what's going to be different?

Unless you want a change from representative government we are always going to have MPs taking decisions they believe are correct.

Some of which some people will disagree with. That's normal.

What we can do is ensure that those elected to be MPs are truly representative and then free of outside influence so they can always decide on merit. The change I want is for Parliament and not parties to be supreme.
