Apparently the site was a 'brickfield', presumably making bricks from London Clay, hence the digging out of the hillside. Is this right?

In 1922 the site, a former brickfield, was bought from the Brighton Railway Company for £2,570. The stadium (designed by Scottish stadium architect Archibald Leitch) was constructed by Humphreys of Kensington (a firm regularly used by Leitch) for around £30,000, and was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of London on 30 August 1924. - Wiki.

Oh that sacred ground! And to think some heathens want to move!

I'd like it rebuilt, brand new, exactly the same, but with a covered Holmesdale terrace.

I love pix of old stadiums. Got some great ones of Molineux in the Fifties.

There is a facebook page which has nothing but pictures of lost grounds, lost stands etc etc - has had some fab pics of Selhurst of which these have all made an appearnce, plus lots more besides

Take a look at pictures of the Vetch Field, Swansea's old ground (now demolished). It's an absolute dog's breakfast, but pretty much encapsulates what has been sacrificed in terms of 'character' (or dangerous and inadequate facilities, if you prefer). Can't really imagine Swansea's current squad ploughing through the Vetch Field mud.
The old three-sided Bramall Lane with cricket ground where the fourth stand now, er, stands, is also a favourite.

Watching the Fulham v Sheff Utd game on ITV4 and admiring the old Archie Leitch (Johnny Haynes/Stevenage Rd) Stand. Looks very similar to the Main Stand at Selhurst, even though it was built 20 years earlier. Shame we didn't get the nice brick facade on the outside, or the gable on the front.
