I don't want to be pessimistic, and of course it is very early days, but I didn't see any sort of quality in Franca whatsoever last night, or in his previous sub appearances.

That's unjustified. He hardly got a touch early on and when he did he immediately was hacked down just outside the box leading to a wasted effort by Eze. He was then in the ideal position for a pass from Lerma who instead decided to blast over. Finally, an astute first-time pass to Eze led to a well-saved shot from our closest chance of scoring

Were you at the Etihad? I was there and thought he helped change the game when he came on with his direct play against the Citeh defence and his vision to pick out a wonderful cross field pass to Olise which enabled us to keep Citeh under pressure.

As for last night, I thought he was basically ignored by his team mates in the first 25 minutes when, on a number of occasions, he was in acres of space with the ball instead going to the other wing and quickly then lost. It's hardly encouraging for a player in his first start if your team mates won't give you the ball.

Yes he made some poor decisions but he also showed he had good close ball skills. I am sure he will improve - and quickly, as he is (according to Hodgson) a quick learner.

He's played 116 minutes for us across several months and I feel like he's being written off by some posters here.

Poor bloke got bugger all service last night and did his best when he was given the ball. He'll need time to adjust to the physicality of the English game, something he is no doubt aware of now after Tarkowski clattered him.

If we're writing him off based on last night, or his last couple of performances, then perhaps we need to write the rest of the team off too as I don't know many others, bar Michael Olise, who have been world class. That includes Eze who has been dreadful since he returned from injury.

Our current system and our current manager are not designed to help young, expressive, attacking players succeed. It is a system and a manager who value conservative, discipline and organised football above anything else. That is why Jordan Ayew thrives. Because he does defensive work and gets fouled on the ball to win free kicks.

Maybe we should let him play 200 minutes for the club before we categorically decide he was a waste of money.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

Agree, as with DB above.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I can only comment on what I know.

The medical team ‘ release ‘ players to the manager when they are deemed to be ready to return to training and therefore selection. Hodgson was advised to rest Olise soon after his return from the injury he picked up playing for France. Which he did .

I have not read anything from the medical team in which they advised Hodgson to sub Olise . If you can be bothered, please feel free to post in on here.

And maybe you could also prove that Hodgson is “ deflecting “ by sharing the medical report that you read. I’m sure we would all like to understand more.

I don’t always back Roy. If you are capable of reading my posts without the prejudice you always display towards him, that might sink in although I’m far from confident it will.

I never feel the need to explain myself to a Roy apologist as you amongst a couple of others on here won’t hear a bad word against him. Where did I say that the medical team told him to sub Olise? Roy was told to take care in his use of him. Oh and finally, do your own research I don’t make stuff up, I just quote what I’ve read online.

All I know is that we are a premier club severely limited by lack of shareholder funds.
Last summer we spent virtually £50m on three players none of whom started the season in the first team, and only one who has subsequently come in through injury (Henderson).

As a comparison, Fulham secured Adam Traore on a free transfer last summer age 26.
There are many others out there who we could have got for sub £10m who would have been instant starters. Ok, their salaries would have been more but they would have shored up our holes.

I dont get what we are doing. We are constantly buying in junior injured players in the hope they get fit and eventually make the first eleven. It just seems a very strange strategy.

I remain hopeful that Franca will learn and improve. But I am at odds to question what he is being taught right now. The boy showed a few nice touches and raw talent last night in a dire game of negativity. Maybe he has a future in the top leagues of football but as yet the jury is out. Is that grounds for us to spend nearly half our annual budget on? Not in my book.

Just the kind of response I was expecting from you.

As I’ve said before, I’m no Roy apologist. I’ll defend him where I think criticism is unwarranted or when I agree with his management when others don’t. That doesn’t give him a free pass on everything he does. But you don’t have it in you to understand that do you ?

You said - “ if Roy had protected him ( Olise ) as advised by his medical staff and taken him off once we had a two goal lead “ etc etc. Your words.

I’m not accusing you of making stuff up, I invited you to share content which directly contradicts what Hodgson said about the injury Olise picked up last Saturday . I’ll draw my own conclusions from your reluctance to do so.

I guess his natural ball playing ability was the skill which Freedman must have identified as being his major asset. If that is the case then training in this area for him is likely to be less needed. Roy’s vast experience particularly in the art of adding system play and modern defensive awareness to his game will be vital for his development and he should soak up all he is being shown in order to give him a chance of succeeding in this part of the football world. He has potential but currently is nowhere near a starter. We all hope he grows physically and learns to add to his natural ability.COYP

Just remember Olise’s first few games. No one would have thought how he would turn out. Impossible to know how it will turn out with Franca but I feel hopeful.
