Banter with opposition fans before segregation.

My Dad has been following Palace for 70 years and is often reminiscing about some of the away trips he has made over the years. One thing that always stands out from his stories is how fans from both clubs stood side by side. I can remember this myself from when my Dad started taking me to watch Palace both home & away from 1964. The other day I asked him whether the banter with the opposition fans ever got out of hand & he said not really & any bad feeling would all be forgotten by the end of the game. He then reminded me of a match down at Brighton’s Goldstone back in 1976, when amazingly both sets of fans still mixed on the terrace opposite the main stand. My Dad was cheering on the lads & said something to effect that we should be winning by a margin when a Brighton fan just in front of us said that my Dad would see the game more clearly if he took his sun glasses off (my Dad wore reactor glasses). At this point my Dad making reference to Mullery's similar looking glasses, responded “is that why fu*ng Mullery can’t see the s*e he puts out there”! He also recalled another event that happened at the same game, when the guy over the PA system was advertising a Brighton anorak stating it was guaranteed to keep you dry & guaranteed to keep you warm, at which point alaneagle1 who was with us shouts out “and guaranteed to get you beaten up at away games”! I remember quite often changing ends at half time to be behind the goal we were attacking. There was generally very good banter with opposition fans & it very rarely got out of hand.

There was no segregation at all which meant that when my little brother stood at the front and was leant on by a large Wiltshire women the banter ensued: My Dad: Excuse me; can you please not lean all over my son Her husband: Don't you tell my wife what to do you cockney cnut My father avoided the haymaker with consumate ease and knocked the guy out with a fine uppercut.
