Oh for sure - How often will a club pay over the odds because they think a single player is the solution to a particular problem & in the hope of solving that problem they can (for example) maintain PL status, which in turn provides adequate payback - Obviously a gamble, great if it comes off, it can be devastating if it doesn't. I think the market rate is more related to what most would pay....because you are always going to have the odd customer go way over or way under....but what the majority would pay should surely qualify more. Just my two pennies.

At this stage of the window there is definitely a degree of brinkmanship, especially when it comes to players that clubs would rather not sell. I wonder if Chelsea had bid 40m in say June whether Everton would have accepted that. Similarly, Fofana's price is not going to come down with the window close to closing. Another factor is the availability of options. If a manager says he wants a player with PL experience then that immediately narrows the pool. If they want him to be young that shrinks it further. Watching the Sunderland Till I Die documentary is great viewing if you want to see what Everton, Chelsea and West Ham's office will look like on the last day of the transfer window. For Palace I don't think we're desperate and that puts us in a stronger bargaining position. It might be frustrating that we miss out on targets, but I think it is good if we go in knowing what we want to pay and stick to it. I wonder if Parish has looked to Levy in this regard. Just my two pennies. I agree that at the time of an inflated price is paid ,that doesn’t represent the going rate. But as we see with the transfer market going forward once these precedents are set in just a season or two they become a norm, Just a few seasons ago who would have dreamed you would be paying £25/30 million for promising Championship players. Yet the pattern was set two or three seasons back, now those figures crop up all the time, I would add that there is possibly two markets developing here, divided by the haves, and the have nots, one seems to have limits, the other none.

I think it's a good observation. The divide in wealth in football accelerates far beyond the divide in ability. It models the way society has gone. I'm among the first to recognise that ability deserves better rewards but I don't think the market works well here. I remember Cameron...back during his 'call me Dave' stage spoke about this crazy spike difference between the highest and lowest paid in a company. Of course, when he got in he did bugger all about it. If you go back to the beginning of the seventies the bank manager was far more connected to a realistic wage...I don't know, say ten times the salary of the bank clerk. Obviously I'm very much not on the left but I can't help but agree with the complaints in this area. Reward the talented and have the most able in the most important jobs...but what people earn shouldn't divide them from the real world.
