Yep excellent points.

Solid Palace man, a good player and leader for us when this club was in dire need of those players.

Always seemed very grounded and I for one am sad to see him go....I also liked Richard Shaw, another ex player who seemed sensible and was sent on his way by previous management.

Vieira was asked about Derry yesterday and confirmed that it was his decision to remove Derry, but he didn’t go into any details as to why.

That’s his prerogative and there are issues of confidentiality to consider too.
What is slightly odd though is that there could have been a restructuring of the coaching set up with Derry resuming a coaching role with the youngsters as he had before.
Parish and co have a lot of time for Derry and he’s a respected figure at the club for his past achievements with us.
The fact that he’s left the club completely would point to a fairly serious falling out.

Demoting someone to a previously held position rarely works out, people tend to get all upset & either throw their toys out of the pram or leave as soon as something better comes along -

Ive just read the Athletic article and it seems PV sacked him. He didn't like the way he dealt with the players after the Everton smashing and apparently thats not the only time.
Seems Derry was too over the top for Pat and his princesses
He wont be replaced either.

Heard it here first

If true, then all we have to do is find a striker from somewhere for him to coach!

I’m guessing PV is hardly in the mould of Alex Ferguson then. The players probably deserved an ear bashing after the Everton performance and I doubt the softly softly approach adds any steel to the players.

Perhaps Vieira doesn’t subscribe to the good cop/ bad cop school of management. He worked under Wenger of course who apparently after a heavy defeat or bad performance wouldn’t say a word in the post match dressing room. Wenger would address the issues instead on the Monday morning when heads were cooler.
It would appear the the days of the Alex Ferguson ‘hairdryer treatment’ after poor performances are well and truly over.

Thank you Sean Derry. A very solid DM for Palace who I saw play many times

Not really. The Ferguson approach worked for some players and not for others, but he was smart and powerful enough to build a squad of players who responded to his hair-dryer method. In contrast, Wenger did exactly the same thing and was successful with the opposite method - not "soft" but calm and measured. There isn't one, fixed "best" management style; different players are motivated by different bosses and good managers find the right players for their approach. Vieira, unsurprisingly given that his mentors are Wenger and Guardiola, is not a disciple of throwing things around the dressing room. That hardly makes him "soft". The caveman-only era is, thankfully, over.

I'm lucky enough to have had a number of conversations with Shaun a few years ago. His daughter used to dive with my two at Crystal Palace Diving Club and we used to chew the fat whilst the kids were either training in the pool or in the conditioning gym.

In my view he's a top bloke, easy to talk to and not big headed in anyway. He talked about being a County fan not Forest and growing up on an estate in Nottingham. I mentioned I'd been chased over the river Trent by Forest fans once when we played forest away - he just laughed. He also mentioned playing football as a kid with 20-30 aside and with much older kids and that's why he thought he could always hold his own. He mentioned he was always the most popular kid on the estate, and kids were always knocking at his door, he initially thought that was down to his magnetic personality but turned out he was the only one with a football.

He's palace through and through, he loved the club and fans and Hillsborough was his hardest match both mentally and physically.

I asked him about playing at Selhurst and he said it was second to none - so load when we're in full voice the players can't hear each other on the pitch, and it is really a 12th man.

I also asked what was it like when we sung about him being better than John Terry - he just laughed and said it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

I'd say he wouldn't take any sh*t, and I wouldn't want to mess with him. If you want someone to give the players a rocket he's yer man but he'd be fair.

Maybe PV and him just don't see eye to eye - I hope its not the last we see of him though.

Btw - his missus is lovely as well, but I seem to recall she's Millwall but shes from the old kent road so I let her off
