I agree to an extent. It was pretty obvious a few years ago that he would see out his contract and then seek a new challenge.

I am a bit surprised a top 6 English club hasn't tried to sign him as a free - Newcastle being the obvious one now they are in the Champions League and have just spent nearly £40m on a left winger - but he has clearly chosen a club that will play to his strengths, give him a chance of silverware and give him Champions League exposure.

He is clearly being well paid but could have got more elsewhere if money was his motivation.

My concern is we've had a few years to adjust to this day and yet here we are with no left wingers in our squad and only 2 (average) strikers in the squad

Nail hit firmly on its head, sir.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

I wonder how long it will take to find out what happened behind the scenes with Wilf. I'm guessing some rumours will pop up soon.

This is a 'fans' view of Wilf leaving . . .

Simon: It's a great move for Wilf and I fully understand it. He wants Champions League football and to be at a club that can win domestic titles. He will shine in Turkey as he should post better numbers for goals and assists. He is at his peak. Palace have already replaced him, as we have three players who can play his position. His influence was fading.

I've highlighted that little sentence, what do you lot think?

I mean under the vieira season he got 15 / 16 goals? he played 32 games i think? 1 goal in 2 games average? that was his best return he has had for us?

Last season he was back to his usual numbers 7 goals and a few assists in less games. albeit last season he had a few injuries.

The numbers might have been better in recent years, but nothing can replace the excitement of watching early 20's Wilf

I suspect nothing interesting.

The fact that he has let his contract run down has always been a clear indication that he is going. Discussions would have been ongoing for a couple of years.

Palace's reported 200k offer was (likely untrue) disproportionately good to help persuade someone who was honest in the fact that he was leaving. Or agent chat to be used as wage bargaining for another club.

Wilf expected to get more offers from better teams, but made the best choice with what he was offered. Reasonable money, cool city, change for silverware, CL appearances.

But hey who knows, maybe re appointing Roy was enough for him to say I'm off. Or the thought of having to play with JPM for another season

I think he is a better player now than he ever was.

I noticed Forest signed 21 year old Elanga from Man U for 15 mil, whilst we piss around with Gray for nearly the same. I wonder who anyone would prefer?

It's very hard to explain this to people who are both ignorant of it but also know that you are a Palace fan. ASM gives it a go but I've never seen a player like or better than Wilf who can singlehandedly move the ball toward the final third so consistently. Bolasie was also close so having both of them whilst we did was electric.

I've always thought his problem was being such an individual talent. At us, he was probably worth more than the rest of the team combined and almost was our footballing identity on his own. At a bigger club, where they need to incorporate top players into one team, he wouldn't quite fit a whole team game plan and what they would want from a winger as part of that bigger picture.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Very true. I have often pointed this out in the past when discussions have surrounded Wilf moving to a big club.

At Palace he was for a long time a biggish fish in a smallish pond. He was our star player and exciting, and sometimes thrilling, to watch. Yes, he could be greedy and over-elaborate, and did often hang on to the ball for too long. But we largely tolerated this as we knew that it was this single-mindedness that also produced some inspiring moments.

Had he moved to a top club some of his indulgences wouldn't have been tolerated in the same way. He would have had to become more of a team player. I suppose the question is, how easily would he have adapted to this and would it have blunted that aspect of his play that made us in thrall to him.

For years he was too good for us let alone the opposition.

Finally last season caught him up. The young blood was let loose by Roy and suddenly combined with injury we did well without Wilf on the pitch.

He is undoubtedly one of our all time greats cast in stone (or in paint for a good while yet).

He has given me unbelievable value for money over the years. He was immense for us.

Luckily for us, he hung on and hung on just when he could have found a top club home and now he goes just as we find our feet without him.

Absolute legend thanks for the many memories and for keeping us in the Premier.

(Personally I reckon all the confusion re offers etc. that has plagued us all for many months has nearly all been clickbait bull. as can be seen by his alleged deal at Galata.)

My personal view is that Wilf will do a year in Turkey, score a load of goals and get a move to a bigger club . He will be happy and so will Gala.
