Automation on trains is surely on the horizon, striking train drivers just focusses the government initiative to get introduced & rolled out faster.

Not much point when the system will be automated before long.
If we can have driverless busses and tubes then why not trains?

And as Khan rolls out his ULEZ tax more and more people who can't afford a new car will be forced to pay increased fares to fund pay rises for others earning £5000 a month.

The rail companies have just announced that they will close all ticket offices over the next 3 years so large scale redundancies are on the way.

In London we are used to contactless / ticketless travel and little platform staff well the rest of the country is about to catch up.

With the unions being so bolshi the rail companies have nothing to lose. If the unions acted a bit more responsibly public sympathy would be on their side but I'm afraid that has long gone.

The word Lemmings spring to mind.

High tec has even reached here in deepest Somerset already! You have the choice of doing everything on the two machines on the platform at Yeovil Junction, or you can go into the ticket office, join the queue and the discussion as to whether or not the stationmaster should have his operation now or wait til his wife has had hers and recovered, complete with details of every other passengers' hospital experiences in the last 5 years...... win, win - what's not to like?

(and he won't go and wave the train off until the discussion is over and everyone has their ticket)

Spot on - and it won’t stop there as there’s no way Khan will pay to install these cameras just for the few years it takes people to do that. Once he starts collecting his camera tax the goalposts will be continually moved so it can carry on. More people will be forced to take the train and fund the selfish b******s. Roll on driverless trains. A quick, simple, fully automated railway is the answer but only until the maintenance staff realise they can then hold us to ransom…….

The rail unions will just not accept modernisation because it does away with overtime and other "Spanish practises".
Sack every one of them today and offer them a new contract from Monday - take it or leave it.
Let them all lose their jobs if they want to.
Forget the law and the European courts - sack with no pay - end of.
Most will be back on Monday and the rail unions are finished.
It is not pie in the sky either - it can and should be done.
Train drivers earn a basic £57k plus overtime and the pension that you and I give to them.
A package widely thought to be worth in excess of £90k/year which would put them easily in the top 10% of earners in the UK.
Go on strike - why not eh?
Greedy people

Driverless busses are being trialled into Edinburgh but need two operators. One stand by driver to take over if there are any issues and one conductor.

Unmanned stations is NOT modernisation !!! Unmanned stations would be a haven for muggers, drug addicts and all sorts of crime. More Tory twaddle and lies.

They have already said that the ticket staff would be employed to roam the stations to help passengers - they are not intending to make them redundant.
So it is not twaddle and lies but if you are so steeped in Union dogma as opposed to the real world then all the best to you!

It will without doubt make train travel FAR worse than it currently is.Where I live it will be far worse than "walking down the street".

Fair enough. Where I lived the station was far safer. Lights, other people around, CCTV, no one on mountain bikes looking for a quick getaway, etc.
