The bottle of Penderyn which was to have been used to celebrate is, instead, being drunk as a form of medication. An anti-depressant. The euphoria of being 10-0 up was soon forgotten in too many penalties, poor line-outs and sloppy passing as you rightly say and there it is.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I was prepared to give rugby a watch last night, particularly as wife's from Cork. However I was dismayed by the appalling standard of commentary on ITV. Sounded like a bunch of technicians chatting away to each other in the pub, no attempt to explain what's going on to the millions watching, most of whom presumably like me, have no idea about penalties, rucks, mauls, 50:22 (what the f's that,?!!!) And don't get me started on what's going on inside the scrum. At one point the Irish no 12 kicked it straight to the All Blacks who then scored a try, which seemed to me a schoolboy error but none of the commentators even mentioned it.I didn't even know Ireland had been awarded a penalty try until I read it in the match report today.Rubbish commentary but enjoyed the passion and commitment from both teams.

When I was at school the ref would blow something up and we only knew which way the penalty went due to the direction his arm was pointed. Now with millions of rule changes you just have to look at the blank expression on the face of the player being reprimanded to know he has no clue why. The ref might as well be explaining string theory in Hebrew.

So what chance us.
