He was OK in midfield for a game or two but the cup game at home to Everton exposed how little he can give offensively, as a centre back he looks OK but every time he makes a mistake it seems to lead to a goal far too often, and as a right back the other night he answered the question why he was not put there earlier. Don't like to be negative but I think this is the one buy Vieira got wrong, his recruitment was excellent otherwise - he's had plenty of chances but I now regretfully have to conclude that he is poor, I prefer Riedewald.

Disagree! You are right about CR playing as a full back, but he is doing a good job both as central defender and midfielder. Hope he put Hughes on the bench with the American taking his place tomorrow. Guess Hodgson will not use the newcomers. Wharton probably a couple of games for Under 21 while our new right back must learn English before the boss plays him.

He's fine as a squad player being able to fill in various positions to varying degrees of success .Obviously his best being CB where he is quite capable ,DM only when we park the bus and RB emergency cover only Not sure what anyone expects from fringe players , if they were any better they would be playing week in week out .Basically we wont get anyone better to sit on the bench for long periods
And we still need a striker |

Perhaps I'll come across as a bit too prejudiced here but for all his athleticism, technical ability and commitment, I am beginning to see him as an American who perhaps doesn't understand football to the extent other players from around the globe instinctively will. He still looks a bit lost and unsure sometimes. This can be perilous in the PL.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

IMO the criticism is a little unfair. He's a CB first and foremost. Not as gifted on the ground as Marc, but bigger and better in the air. If we got a bid in for Anderson I'd have no issue in him stepping in to partner Marc. Midfield and RB he is not. He's doing a job, and its not really his faut that he's trusted more to play out of position than e.g. Hughes. The different positions require such different skills and positioning. (hopefully people can stop asking for Anderson to be given a go in centre mid too)

He's our third best but could improve with a bit more experience.

Clearly as an American supporter I'm unable to understand the game as instinctively as others on this board. Nevertheless, to counter the criticism of a player who by his own admission and general agreement is a center back by profession, I raise this question: How do we think Guehi or Andersen would look if asked to play RB or DM? I'll throw my apparently undersized hat in with the majority of you who acknowledge his ability and contributions. He was, after all, named Player of the Month last January in his first extended run. The next Virgil van Dijk? No, but he has served the club well.

He is an average enough player but he did get better after a few runs in midfield. It is very hard to grade him as he hasn’t played enough. His biggest negative for me is his lack of composure on the ball.

I’m not sure if you mean that seriously Charlie but if so, and my post had any influence upon that statement, I’d just like to clarify that I was only and deliberately exposing my own prejudiced thinking there. I make you right, and MrRobbo stated so quite competently, he does both play sporadically but also typically out of position. I like Chris, i don’t doubt him with any sincerity. I’d put Hodgson in the blame for the aforementioned as I’m often under the impression he picks players/personalities in favour of more strategic thinking. If Richards constantly played CM, Schlupp played on the wing and so on, we’d think they were terrible players. I thought it might also sincerely affect Ozoh vs Sheffield United as he seemed to come on under completely spontaneous instruction outside of his comfort zone.
