May be a bit late but suddenly dawned on me that we pretty much released all of our back up to Dann/DD. Of course Tomkins seems to be on the way which I think is a terrific signing (so do my wet spam mates) but surely we need at least another 2? And do you think we should go young or try and bring in some experienced back up? Some really good names who are free agents atm (Caceres from Juventus being one).

Also I'm good friends personally with Ryan Inniss and would love to see him get a chance this season, just not sure if/how much pards fancies him.

Depends on whether you consider Kelly to be adequate as a 4th centre back or not, if yes then we just need Tomkins or similar, if not we need Tomkins and another centre back who'd be content as a bench and cup player, in my opinion we'd need another.

Also we'd probably need to consider how to fit another into the 25 man squad. At present I count 24 players who would need to be included based on age (including Williams, Fryers, Appiah who were not in last seasons 25).

Can't see us having 4 keepers in the 25, 1 will probably go, giving us 2 spots in the 25

Defence, definitely 1 more centre back, possibly a second, and possibly a back up left back, unless Fryers or Binnon-Williams are up to it (so either Fryers keeps his spot in 25 or a new player takes his spot. So back up to 25

Don't think we need more quantity here, quite a few fringe players, Mutch, Lee, Williams some solid rotation players, Jedi, Ledley, Sakho. It also seems that the 3 players in our youth setup closest to being ready are midfielders (Gray, Boateng, Kaikai). Midfield may be where we loan or sell from to create more space in the 25 for defenders and forwards.

At present we just have Wickham, Campbell and Appiah. Definitely need another who by my count would need one of the midfielders spots in the 25, and honestly don't know if Appiah is in contention for a spot, Campbell isn't a bad player but would assume that at least one of Campbell or Appiah would miss out and a second new striker included?

Doubt Mutch Fryers, or Lee will make the squad and I would be surprised if Campbell does as well

Approach will be loaned out first I'm sure.

I really think the back up players to the regular match day squad need to be of the utility type that can fill in wherever .
This not only keeps the squad down to a manageable size but also keeps the players on the fringes half happy knowing they will get game time .

With that in mind Kelly is a decent enough player to be counted as cover across the back four. Another with his adaptability would be enough to go with .

At some time we have to give those coming through the ranks a chance to play at a higher level .Don't really see the point in having youth , development teams if they never progress to the first team.

We have got a good number of players who can play in that role once Tomkins signs and no doubt there'll be youth if we get desperate. Still think we'll sign another youngster.

The squad will not be less than 25, plus those who are young enough to not need to be included. We struggled enough in the second half of last season with injuries and it would be even worse, in the same circumstances with a smaller squad.

Ryan Innis is up to the job if he can stay fit.

Ideally I'd say 4
Dann
Delaney
Tomkins?
And a 18-23year old who can grow with the players around him but what club isn't looking for talented young defenders?

He has been very unlucky with injuries. He is only 21 and I think its a bit of a step up from doing well at Portvale last season to doing well at PL level. Another loan this time with a championship club might be the next step for him?

Three I think. We need to upgrade on Delaney. Absolutely. Plus have another one come in as competition/cover...and then another to challenge with Soure for the LB berth.
