Buying an effective goalscorer is the hardest part of football management, as it's the most competitive part of the market. Some will get lucky with who they sign, but the vast majority of forwards bought and sold will fall short of the magic threshold of 20 goals a season for the simple reason that (and here's the thing we sometimes forget) scoring is the hardest part of the game. There's only so many human beings alive who can get 20 premier league goals a year, why on earth does anyone think we should be entitled to one?

In fairness to the club they've tried pretty much every approach to it, ranging from speculative punts at reasonable prices (Wickham and sorloth) to loaning guys who have done OK at this level before but who you might want to reserve judgment on (ayew and remy) to a balls out record signing (that one) but none of them have worked out. All were potentially good signings in a very difficult market, and I really don't see what else they could have done.

tbf ive never thought about his record in the danish leagues as it isnt comparible to england, stephen dobbie is averaging over a goal a game in scotland this season...haha.

i dont think he has had enough gametime to properly settle into this league...hes had what? 12 appearances, lets guess at 4 in the cup comps, so roughly 8 sub appearances, probably totalling less than 200 minutes of PL football.

with regards to seeing what sort of player he is, i would say thats pretty easy, hes a targetman who should be able to bring others into play, and set up chances for somebody quick playing off him, basically in the mould of bentekkers.

so the lad has had approx 2 matches worth of gametime, from the bench, in a team that doesnt create chances for strikers & he is being written off by some people.

unbeleivable...he may turn out rubbish, but lets give him a proper chance 1st.

I am all for giving players a chance I am not disputing that, what I was trying to put across was. I have like a many on Hols have seen a lot of strikers come and go at this club since the middle sixties. Over the years we have had some good strikers at the club. Allan Birchnell, Don Rogers, Mike Elwiss, Tommy Langley ( he he )
Ian Wright, Mark Bright, Andy Johnson to name a few.

Palace have also had their fair share of disappointing failures. At present the strikers we have at Palace are not game winners or game changing players. Ayew did very well for his last club Swansea but what has he done here, nothing. If Hodgson saw something in Sorlorth in training that he thought would start him in front of Ayew then don’t you think Sorlorth would start and be involved in more games. Totally agree that Sorlorth is a target man no question about that and in one or two matches he has held the ball up very well, but being a striker is all about reading and being one step ahead of the game losing your marker finding and making goal scoring positions out of nothing. On those foundations I have not seen from Sorlorth. Maybe he could do with some personal coaching from Andy Johnson but in today’s game the pressures of being a striker you have to hit the ground running and these huge price tags that clubs pay for players don’t help.

9m for Sorloth? who the hell scouted him? they should be sacked immediately.

What makes this even worse is that we paid £9m for him only 8 months after F.C. Midtjylland bought him for £450k from F.C. Groningen, following a failed spell in the Eredivisie!

I would imagine there are clauses in the deal appearances and goals etc so by the looks of things they wont be getting anywhere near 9m

Glenn Murray has scored 8 goals so far, more than our entire team.
Perhaps we should have retained his services???

Parish explained that fully. We couldn't afford to keep him and also make new signings without falling foul of financial fair play.

I was going to say 'Remember, it's not fantasy football', but even in fantasy football you have a maximum budget, and often have to sell in order to buy.

Unfortunately not. We put £9m down initially, with another £2m odd for each season we stay up.

So, £13m or so spent already. There really aren’t enough facepalms to describe this deal.

Hopefully ship him off to Turkey in the close season for anything £6m+ and just try to learn the lessons of a woeful transfer.

But he'd been a beast in the preceding few months and one of the biggest reasons we turned from relegation certs to being safe with five games left. To hear FFP as a reason for not keeping him is pathetic.

Which considering what we paid for and are still paying for people who couldn't score in a brothel is bollocks.

All I know is that both Benteke and now Sorloth have been a disaster for us. Neither have lived up to expectations. Would be ok cover if we could find someone proper but that is not easy

What concerns me about Sorloth is his lack of physical presence as a target man. Has anyone ever see him battle past a defender to win a header? As a target man your job is to hold the ball up and win headers, he doesn’t do that well. If he could, his lack of goals wouldn’t be such an issue.

Against Boro there were several good crosses into the box, towards Sorloth, that he simply didn’t even challenge for. It looks to me either he’s scared to get hurt or lazy.
