hes better than clyne (who i would have back in a heatbeat, despite his alledged “problems”)

he is better than ashley cole was at that age

he is better than trent alexander for sure.

anyway, back to wilf...price for me is £90m. and i honestly think he would star for any top team. for me its arsenal/utd/spurs

Not sure how much genuine mileage is in this interview but, given the dust storm it's attracted I'd expect Wilf to either confirm or put it all to bed.

I think AWB is a better right back than Alexander by a mile , but will never be a better wing back, as he lacks ability going forward.
For the top teams he wouldn’t need to be a good defender as their defenders rarely defend.
Can’t see him improving a lot going forward as he was a winger until recently.
I can see him being moved in the middle , if he was a center back with a big physical partner, he would be another level. So fast , ridiculous tackler and strong. Reminds me of boetang from Germany.

"As a result, it is going to take a hefty offer, well above £50million, before Palace do business."

If so I'm not sure any PL club who are in the Champs League will offer that amount of money. There is more than likely only going to be 4 English teams in it next season. The Spuds and Arse look the teams that might take a punt but presently neither are guaranteed Champs League football.

even for the very low level for football i played i moved because i wanted to be win whatever competition i played in and every human being wants to be successful if they know they have the ability to be so.

if he went in a routledge or julian gray scenario i would be pissed, but thats not the case

Low level, what dog and Duck's third team? Behave yourself lad.

In any form of employment courting the competition is frowned upon, you'd let it slide would you? Not mathematical safe, season not over, next scene AWB, Sakho, Townsend etc are in the papers doing the same thing because it's ok?

Have a think a bit further than past the end of ya schnoz.

Bit different to turning out for a different leisure leagues team because fat Barry can't make five a sides anymore coz his shift changed and you fancy a turn in goal!

im almost 40 and he is the best player i have ever seen play for palace

with better players around him .: meaning he cant be the sole focus of attention from opposition managers he will thrive in any team in the country

i will probably shed a little tear the last time i see him play for our great club

we must, must sign a replacement before he leaves, we simply cannot replace what wilf has, but we can sign a player who will compliment andros on the other side.

Assuming the club know definitely that he is leaving. Can't see us signing a replacement until it is definite that he is off. Also if we are looking for a decent replacement we must surely have to wait for the transfer money. We've been here before, but I think ManUre will take a tidy sum as well.

With respect, I think that's precisely the point Willo was making.

Willo was talking about Zaha in particular and Maine Eagle referred to '' flair '' players.

My point being that whatever the position, a player benefits from having better players around him.

Much as I love Wilf, this annual will he won't he stuff is getting tedious.

Gutted to read his comments but inevitable really. Good to see so many supportive comments. He just never will realise his potential with us. It is a risk for him though, wherever he goes next will not afford him the luxury palace offers him with some of his performances and antics. However, he is an amazing talent and has been good to us as we have him. Genuinely gutted he will be going but he deserves another shot at the top table.

Hate to say it but for me if Wilf is going we should maybe look at AWB as well. We need some serious reinvestment into this team now. Wilf will leave a huge whole. I love AWB but we can replace him let’s all be honest about that. If there is not serious surgery on this team next season, it could be the time that the trap door catches up with us.

Yup, i agree. It's way easier to replace a RB with 10-15 mil - to be honest, AWB is great to watch and he can stop everyone in his path, trouble is, at LB we don't have AWB - PVA costs us too many goals, so cash in on AWB and get two decent, prem standard defenders.

Also, not aimed at anyone in particular but i hear people say 'wilf will never reach his true potential with us'.. well, if a top 4/6 club won't buy him due to inconsistencies etc, what is Wilf's true potential? A decent flair player for a top ten team? If so, he can achieve that with us. However, this is the kicker... we can achieve that without wilf...

Man U are owed money on Wilf, i wouldn't be at all suprised if they tabled an offer for Wilf and AWB - using wilf as a squad player and AWB as potentially their RB.

They can buy wilf off us for 30 mil in theory and say to media he was 50 mil due them probably getting 35% sell on fee. That's peanuts.

They can then offer us 50 for AWB - which i reckon we would accept, as 80 mil in parish's hand would be too good for 2 players.

80 mil to invest on 4/5 players.

Meyer, Benteke, Wickham all need to step up next year also.

you see, the way i look at it, he does look confident going forward and wants to make those runs behind the full back...but always looks like he know he needs to get back at the earliest opportunity so is wary of doing so.

recently it seems he favours cutting inside as if play breaks down he is in a better position to cut out the counter attack...richard shaw deserves a lot of credit for seeing the potential as a full back.

going back to zaha...you dont see sterling/rashford/sane/erikkson/william/hazard etc etc etc praised for their defensive work as they play in attacking teams that dont need that level of tracking back, same for TAA or kyle walker, they dont need to defend that much, so imagine what wilf or aaron could do at a club there they didnt need to expend their energy constantly tracking back.

same goes for benteke at corners.

imagine what our players could do if they weren't employed into a counter attacking system.

This is so depressing. If we had a more imaginative proactive manager who had some vibrancy and ideas about him then Wilf might be preparing for an fa cup final right now rather than courting the press for a transfer.
Why are there not more emphatic calls for Hodgson to move on?
We get a new manager who knows how to change and impact on a game by making subs, has a tactical plan B, gives trust and confidence and game time (!) to young players (am thinking explicitly about Meyer who Wilf links well with !) and then we get Mitrovic from Fulham a striker who Wilf can feed, we got mooy from Huddersfield who can move the ball similarly and score a few and we persuade Wilf to stay. For one more year, under a manager who’s not rigid and quite frankly past it...

This is a very good post and i agree with all you say.

Roy won't change, his at a certain age where he won't change a thing next season.

Look at Watford and Wolves managers, young hungry managers taking their respective clubs forward.

I'd also like Wilf to stay for one more season and Roy director of football next season.

What is depressing is how quick folk are to take piecemeal quotes & a potentially manufactured subtext as gospel. The journo has history of publishing quotes from players but not the very explicit questions they were asked. In this digital age there’s no reason why the whole transcript couldn’t be made available.....but it won’t be.

As soon as I see an article describing Zaha as “The 26-year-old former Manchester United winger“ I already know what the writer’s intentions are.

You’d be mad not to think that Wilf has ambitions beyond Palace. Mad to think he wouldn’t want to play in the UCL. The fact that he’s admitted it to a journo does not mean he’s issuing a ‘come & get me’ call to other teams but the text around his quotes suggests this.

The completely uncorroborated “ But there is a growing feeling behind the scenes at Selhurst Park that this summer is the right time to let their best player leave — if the price is right.“ shouts this but has no ‘source’ or validity.

It may be the case that Wilf wants to move on & the club are prepared to let him but there is at least as much conjecture as fact in the article. Just remember the s***storm after he answered the MOTD reporter honestly about being fouled & the lack of protection he gets...

If he moves on then I hope he succeeds - whatever the future brings he, like Sansom, Wright, Clyne, Moses et al, was made in Croydon.

Edit: More content for better context. [Link]

No Wilf, no Premier League.

This.

We've scored 40 goals this season. Wilf has 10. Milo has 10 pens scored, I think 9 of those came from fouls on Wilf. So roughly Zaha has earned us 19 out of our 40 goals this year.

How the F*** can we ever replace that? We can't. Absolutely no way. We'll end up scoring 25 goals next season, and down we go.

The teams in the mix to get promoted next season all look decent and ambitious, unlike the past couple years. If we lose Zaha (and maybe AWB) our roster is no better than those promoted sides. Considering our last big signing was F***ing Sorloth, who are we kidding that we would replace Zaha???

I don't think it's a great move for Zaha either. He'll be a bit player on any CL team. Instead he could be a legend for us, and make roughly the same money. But I don't begrudge him, if that's what he wants. I think it's a terrible move for Palace and a bad move for Wilf.
