I have to admit I hate this corporate BS probably more than Glastonbury & the Premier League. The days of an amateur athlete having any real chance against a multi million dollar a year professional athlete are virtually gone. You'll find very very few of these athletes staying in the Olympic village with most not want to be mixing with the plebs & luxuriating in 5 star hotels all while claiming significant appearance fees to participate.

There are a few competitions I will follow, but I really felt it fell apart when they made synchronised swimming an Olympic 'sport'
A stairway to Heaven and a Highway to Hell give some indication of expected traffic numbers |

Obviously I'm holding out for the breakdancing, but it's not until the last 2 or 3 days of competition.

Well I have to confess I love em. I find I can get into all sorts of minority sports - archery, kayaking and the oriental fighting stuff. The road cycling is a bore but the velodrome racing is great. All sorts of stuff I otherwise never watch. So yah boo all you cynics I think its great.

On a serious note...I'm in France at the moment, and the absence of signs of the fact that the Olympic Games are about to commence is staggering. It's barely even mentioned on the TV news, and then generally only if there's a French competitor angle or, as today, something 'fruity' like threats against the Israel team members. There are virtually no posters around and about nor merchandise in shops etc.
