Whether one has appropriate players on the bench is a separate issue. Moving a big defender up front provides a different dynamic in that it introduces physicality and aerial prowess which might have been lacking.I cannot see this tactic as being flawed when for example, the game is in it's latter stages and a team which has looked 'toothless' up front is in need of a goal or two.

I'm not criticising a tactic that has probably been employed by every manager at some time. However, in this case we had no other choice as there is no recognised striker to come on from the bench. And I do have an issue with that.
