Hi everyone

I’m hoping one or two of you might be able to help me in my quest.

Amongst the many stats I keep, one is a list of abandoned games. In the 1st instance, back to WWII but eventually back to the beginning of time!. Many official & unofficial sites don’t list these so it is somewhat of a challenge.

Abandoned as opposed to postponed games, so the game has to have actually kicked off.

Back in the day, many were abandoned due to bad light or fog, not so these days, mainly waterlogged pitches or snow now.

See attachment for Crystal Palace list!

Please let me know if you can add to this list. I’m sure there must be a few more. If you can correct any of the information I have, that would also be appreciated. Anything I’ve left out eg. score at time the game was stopped.

Thanks
Peter

Hi. The only abandoned game I remember going to was home to Blackpool when I was a teenager. Quick Google shows ticket for sale ; 28 December 1968. Think the score was 1-1 at the time. We skated into early 1-0 lead. Abandoned because of icy pitch.Think it was abandoned at, our just after, halftime - so no refunds!!!

Last night when the ref's comms kit wasn't working at half-time, I hoped they'd abandon that and allow the score to stand

so in 1952 we were losing 3-1 away to Finchley before fog intervened - thank heavens for those toxic pea soupers.

I was at that game and it was viciously cold. There was another game around then which I'd thought was also against Blackpool which was played in dense fog.

I remember the West Ham game in 1997 when the floodlights failed. I was watching it with Terry Neill in his sports bar in Holborn. He was a nice bloke.

I was at the Lincoln City match in 1976.
Sod of a place to get to ( several changes on the train from what a remember), just to see half a match and have to come home again.

I was at that game too. I think we were leading 1-0 through a Rachid Harkouk goal on a very slippery pitch. We lost the rearranged game 2-3 on 02/03/77 which threatened to put a dent in our promotion hopes.

Why worry about TODAY when TOMORROW will be even worse.

Not an abandoned match but there was a home game in 1973 against Sheffield United that was called off at about 2:45 due to a waterlogged pitch. I remember it because I was a programme seller in the Arthur Waite (Holmesale end in front of the toilets) and sold out all my 800 programmes. I think we lost the rearranged game.

I remember when I was a youngster back in the seventies coming all the way up on the train from Sussex to Norwood Junction. Thought it was odd that there was nobody about with any sign of football scarves etc.. Went all the way to the ground. Arrived at the padlocked rusty old corrugated gates at the top end of the Homesdale. Still no one about. Thought I had got the wrong day.
But then in dismay I saw a wooden board beside the gate with 'Game cancelled' written in chalk on it. I was gutted.

Those were the days

We got the special train that day from Kings Cross that went straight to Lincoln. It was fairly empty though as it was one of those will it, won’t it be on frozen days. My goodness it was cold on that open terrace on the side.
