So which side of the argument do you take? Do you think Byron are total w#nkers for dobbing their staff in to save their own skin? Or do you applaud them for helping clamp down on illegal workers in the UK? There seems to be a big protest against Byron over what happened from some bleeding hearts types but at the end of the day these were illegal workers Edited by Pussay Patrol (01 Aug 2016 12.35pm)

Neither applaud or lambast them. They did what they are legally obliged to do although arguably they shouldn't have had 35 illegal employees in the first place. As for the demonstrators, pathetic and immature, they care so much about people they risk 100s of jobs. Douse them in petrol and wave a Zippo

The attack on this chain is disgusting. If people are here illegally then the authorities have every right to round them up using whatever tactics they please and Byron were obliged to cooperate. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (01 Aug 2016 12.57pm)

Nor should it exclude them from being penalised to the full extent of the law for employing illegal workers. The only way to clamp down on illegal workers is to disproportionately target those employing them with sanctions and penalties, not just the illegal workers. Its all about the money.

The employees gave them fraudulent ID according to reports, when they found this out they got the home office in. The company simply followed the law. On a similar subject, I can't work out for one second why these Australians should be a special case. [Link] I don't even know why she got a student visa in the first place with a husband and kid in tow.

When you have 35 picked up in a single raid, I think its more 'complying to the letter of the law' rather than actually following the law. When I apply for jobs, I have to provide at least three consecutive bank statements, proof of address for five years, passport or drivers licence, two utility bills, NI card and birth certificate. Plus references from two previous employers (from the HQ, not individuals). I'm guessing, that they probably had to show something with their name on it, maybe with a photo.

I'm also guessing that they were tipped off by someone & to avoid being prosecuted invited the home office to make the raids. Utter Scumbags f*** em'

The government doesn't make anyone, legally, provide anywhere near that quantity of documentation and most foreign arrivals wouldn't be able to provide it. If you get what appears to be a genuine foreign passport with the visa or right to abode attached how are you supposed to knows it's fake or fraudulent? You've only been told to check the original and take a copy of it. It'd be better if they had an employment status service that you could actually check them 100% against, like they have in the construction industry, but they obviously don't want to do it due to both the costs and the blame being at their feet if they wrongly advise an employer.

Most chains get staff sent to them and vetted through employment agencies also...if that's the case in this instance then they should also take some of the blame

Surely they would require a passport and a NI card in order to work in the UK (for taxation and NI contributions to be established). No one in the UK should be working without being registered for taxation and NI. Now granted you probably can get a NI card with a fake Passport, but its then moving from being an illegal migrant into committing actual fraud. The restaurant and hotel trades are basically dependent on employing illegal workers as a routine occurrence.

When ever I shift role, because I have fairly high levels of security clearance, I have to prove who I am for each new role. Even if I transfer clearance from one company to another, I have to establish a ridiculous level of proof that I am the person who holds the clearance.
