A VPN is a cutout between you and the site you are looking at to hide your IP address.

Example without a VPN

My IP Address is 123 and located in the UK. When I access any website they can see my IP address and location. So they can block it by country e.g. do not allow UK IP addresses or they can locate me and threaten a law suit for copyright infringement.

Example with a VPN.

I pay a VPN company this is not a free service but it's not that expensive say £50 pa.

I dial up using the VPN my IP address first goes to the VPN site and I choose which country I want to be e.g. Holland. It then leaves that site as a random IP address number that cannot be traced back to me and appears to belong to someone in Holland.

So 123 UK becomes XYZ Holland when I visit the streaming site. As Sky football is normally available outside the UK it is not GEO blocked and if the lawyers are watching they cannot trace it back to the UK.
