Palace in the 1973 Torneo di Viareggio

Palace featured as the only English side in this annual tournamant in Italy in 1973. They made it to the semi-final before going out to Fiorentina. I found footage from that game here [Link] Info about the tournament here [Link] Does anyone remember this?

This was a Youth Team competition which isn't mentioned in the Complete Record, although coincidentally we also played Fiorentina in the Anglo- Italian Cup in May 1973. Great footage of the game which briefly shows Dave Swindlehurst at 12 seconds. There's a midfielder with long hair who could be Martin Hinshelwood. It's the right vintage for Nick Chatterton and Jim Cannon too although Jimmy was in the Anglo-Italian squad. But no, I had no recollection of this tournament till I saw this.

Who is the keeper ??? Good question. I attach an article (hope you can read it) taken from the Palace v Leicester programme, dated 20th April 1973, our last home game of the season. This mentions the Youth team who that day were headed to Holland for a tournament. That was a couple of weeks before the Italian tournament mentioned above. So I would guess that the squad for both tournaments was fairly similar. In case you can't see the article (which has a deep blue background), here's the line-up for Holland:- Paul Hinshelwood, Terry Austin, Dave Swindlehurst, Gary Towse (keeper), Vic Pain, Jim McAughtrie, Mick Parker, Harry Watson, Len Prince, Graham Thomas, David Mann, Nick Chatterton, Des McCarthy, Andy McBride, Malcolm Beason and Brian Parry (Keeper). So that would suggest the keeper in the footage could be either Towse or Parry.
