Probably because some psychologist, somewhere, one day decided that off the wall stupid questions would give the interviewers a deep, meaningful insight into the candidate......... the fact that it just makes them look like ar$es hasn't occurred to them yet.

Because generally the most stupid people conduct interviews. I used to sit in on a lot of interviews, and think a part of the problem is that interviews are either conducted by people who are trained to interview people but have no idea about the job they're interviewing people for, or people who know the job, and have no professional training and limited interest/experience in interviewing candidates. Then there is a small group, that are both. When I started interviewing people for employment, my sum experience and qualification for doing so, was having been interviewed myself.

What is your most negative trait - Where do you see yourself in five years - What kind of animal do you see yourself as - Why did you leave your last job -

If I ever get to interview anyone I am just going to destroy them. 1) If you HAD to rape or murder someone which would you pick? 2) What number am I thinking of? 3) Are you going to answer this mandatory rhetorical question? And right at the end: 4) For our paperwork do you prefer to be addressed as male or female?

This is better phrased where multiple interviewers are present, with 'which of us would you choose to rape, murder or marry'

You have to interview 50 candidates - all wearing essentially the same outfit, are of the same age and appearance, you can barely separate them on their CVs and all essentially give the same replies to stock questions. Now you have to do something unexpected in order to try and remember the ones you will shortlist for 2nd interview. One technique is the daft question. Another I have heard of is putting a bucket in front of the door. Does the candidate trip over it and, if so, how does he react? Does he move round it, step over it or pick it up and put it safely to the side?
