Was told that Mike Deakin passed away on July 15 aged 83. Anyone have memories of him as player? Edited by Penge Eagle (04 Aug 2017 1.40am)

Yes, scored the first Palace goal that I can remember, a header at the Whitehorse Lane end. I was very young so I can only go on vague memories but he was a regular scorer for Palace, a lot with his head; a kind of Third Division South Christian Benteke.

I remember Mike Deakin very well. He was our centre forward at what was a very bleak time for us. Despite that he scored 63 goals in 151 appearance. On the first day of his penultimate season at Palace exactly 59 years ago today, prior to his transfer to Northampton, he and Johnny Byrne scored a hat trick apiece v Crewe at Selhurst in a 6-2 win in front of 13,511 in a Division 4 game. Deakin was the ideal foil for the boy wonder Byrne and between them that season they scored 40 goals. Mike's return was brilliant as he scored his 23 in only 34 games. RIP Mike Deakin

I wonder how many times in English league history two team-mates have scored a hat-trick. Anyone know of a reference source? Sad news.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |
