Coronation Street 1978-85 was by far the best programme on TV and its biggest star? One Hilda Ogden. RIP Chuck...I mean Jean. Actress extraordinaire.

Watched her only the other day as "Aunty Wainwright" and thought how well she played the role. RIP Jean.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Jean Alexander, not just because I vividly remember watching her in her most famous TV role as I was growing up, but also because I felt as if she was a part of my own community over the past few years as she lived just a few minutes drive away from me. To me, she was 'Mrs Coronation Street', perhaps the most iconic character from one of TV's most revered programmes. And I've heard it said that she was the most talented actress on the show, as Hilda Ogden was so far removed from her own real-life persona while most of the rest of the cast more or less played themselves. A much-loved and respected lady who will be fondly remembered by a great many people.

She's hardly an academy awarded thespian.... played one character in a soap for decades... that was about it. However, she obviously brought a lot of joy to her army of fans. RIP Jean.

And the best actors win the academy awards...or the best looking ones with the best PR machines and most commercially successful films? RIP Jean. A great character actress in the great tradition of British character actors/actresses.

I acknowledged her popularity but for me she's not in the class of let's say Tom Hanks or Dame Judy Dench.
