I think part of the problem last time was that they wanted a whole lot of data, e.g. biometric data, which was seen by many as unnecessary. The argument was that it should just hold necessary information (what that would be is up for debate). History tells us that it is a 100% certainty that this data will be abused, by someone, at some point. That doesn't mean that it is something for the average person to worry about, though.

I've had an id card for many years, well various from different countries. Most European countries demand by law that you carry your id card with you at all times and it's an offence not to do this. No one has an issue with this and it allows you to keep a passport safe at home and only use that for traveling outside of Schengen. I never take my passport with me when traveling within Schengen but carrying id card is mandatory.It's credit card sized and many services ask for id number before you can sign up for them. Never had any issues at all and I think it's a great idea. I think in the UK it's fear of the unknown. Regarding insurance, many countries ask for id card before they will issue any policy. Simple yet effective.

My recollection is that the last Labour government passed legislation that laid down a framework for ID cards. This legislation was then repealed by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government. I haven't gone to the trouble of checking, but I assume that this will have been one of the Lib-Dems' 'red lines'before agreeing to go into coalition ...another being a referendum on an alternative voting system. However, I do recall many prominent Conservative MPs being against ID cards, most notably David Davies.

seems a bit OTT to have an ID card, driving license and passport. I wouldn't like a law that said you have to carry it at all times. Sometimes it's nice to go out without anything at all.
